New Knife. Original Idea?

Thought you may like to see my 3rd homemade knife. Made from 4mm, 01 Carbon stock. Had the idea of putting the firesteel in the handle, haven't seen it before so apologise if it isn't an original idea, but until I hear otherwise it mine. Its been used already so doesn't look as pristine as it did when first finished, I couldn't wait to give it a try. Its shave sharp, and holding a good edge so far. Made using the same process as my others. Cherry Handle, hollow brass rods for the pins providing the ability to lash to a stick if needed, highly unlikely but I liked the idea.

Looks excellent - I would love to have a go at making a knife but wouldn't know where to start. There are some truly beautiful pieces of work on this forum (this one included) :)

wow, that rocks :D
Awesome idea!
I like the idea of the hollow pins too - could be very useful!
Just out of curiosity, how snugly does the steel fit in? My only concern would be it falling out... perhaps it could be made with threads so it screws in?

Although you can't tell, the end cap is slightly oval, once inserted just give it a genlte twist and it locks in place, I can't get it to fall out. I may look at threading my next model, this was just to test the concept and get some feedback really.

Ha ha... Snap ! My design has a screw thread in it to take a brass handled fire-steel, but you beat me to unveiling it as my own idea! :p

i was just thinking about the fire steel having a solid brass cap so you could use it for pounding - not convinced it would work, but might be ok...?

Kick bottom! You could also make another plain plug and put matches or aspirin or other stuff in there as well.
Aspirin, now there's an idea! *prone to terrible headaches in the summer *

Silkstone, Blighty!
Followed the link from another thread, not sure how I missed this but that is a nice knife and a good idea. Could you make the back of the handle so that is a bit more profiled as it looks quite squared off, or is it designed that way for lashing the knife to a stick as you described before?

it'll soon be a very very fashionable feature. trust me it will. ;) you'll rightly be hailed as an innovator and trendsetter. :You_Rock_
