Here's a couple of pictures of my new baker tent in use.

My Grandson Cameron is modelling it.

baker1.jpg

Ignore the square poles - I didn't have time to cut round poles.

baker3.jpg

The skins hanging on the poles are wolf/coyote cross on the left and timber wolf on the right

Inside on the floor is a grizly bear skin (a ten footer).

Eric,
That is fantastic, and just the right sort of situation for it. It looks as if you are really into green woodworking and bodging. Have you come across a friend of mine, Kenny Grieve? He could probably use on of these as he seems to do the same sort of things as yourself. If we could persuade him to get one then I would be able to see close up when he comes to work in Aberdeenshire!

I'll tell you what! It's flippin' fantastic when it starts raining. Saturday night it came down in buckets. We had the fire under the canopy and we were warm as toast. In fact I tied a fork to a branch and we made toast over the fire tray - lashings of best butter dripping down our chins.

I'm looking at constructing something similar with IPK sheets. I'm drawn between this and a tipi type construction. I know you have a hex 3, which do you think would be better for a night out with one of my kids or two?

It's not the sort of tent you can easily carry on your back, but it'd fit right into a canoe. It was originaly designed so you'd cut saplings for the poles on site then abandon them when you moved on, but I have the van and can peel fresh poles and take them with me. The tent took 30 metres of cotton canvas to make and I have enough left on the bolt to make a ten foot and sixteen foot yurt which will be my next major project. When folded, the canvas will fit into a medium size Duluth pack.
Easy enough to portage.

Thats nice mate, how long did it take to make it, did you have the measurements already or did you just make it to your own specs, tempted to make one for me and my boy :D

Okay! Monday Morning! Silly question time....why is it called a Baker Tent?

Is it because it was used by itinerent bakers, or did Mr Baker come up with the design?

cheers

I see why you got the hernia Eric (ouch!)

You can light a fire in it and they claim you can set it up without poles just by using a tree. I’d love to see one in the flesh. They look easy to make.

Eric,

Not a very good example for the protection of wildlife, both the Grizzly and Timber Wolf are on the US endangered lists. Sorry m8 bad taste.
