My take on a wood gas burner

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Nice one Jack bring it along to the next meet up and we can all have a look.
Many thanks for the charcoal as it kept us all warm and cooked the food well for us.

Thanks guys. No particular designed followed, we just got the end of the tin of golden syrup and I thought, wait a minute, a standard tin will fit in there. This gave me some inspiration, but it was the lid of the syrup tin that sealed it for me (if you pardon the pun). Figured it could be removed so I could clean it out when needed.

Not really. I did it with a drill and a Dremel, but you could get away with tin snips to cut the flaps. I'll take some pics of it dismantled if that would help. Also need another small either sweet corn or tuna tin to make a pot holder. Will drill a lot of holes in it and a larger one so that I can add some fuel.

Good one Jack. Nicer than the one I made and looks good and stable with the golden syrup tin.
I might have to have another go in the workshop over Christmas.
Cheers.

As promised here's the bits for my burner

The three parts. Big tin, little tin and lid.

As you can see I've just drilled some holes in the bottom, around the base and towards the top of a standard tin (cat food in this case). Be careful that the top holes will sit both below the rim of the syrup tin and the flanges.

I also cut the centre out of the lid of the syrup tin then cut slots back so that I could make flanges to help hold the can in place. I used a Dremel but you could drill a series of holes around the inner circle and then cut out with some tin snips.

Then I pushed the can through and positioned the lid. It's worth noting that you will want to allow some space under the can to allow some airflow.

Then it all pops together. Next I need to take a small sweet corn or tuna can to sit on top to act as a pot holder. On this I will drill lots of holes round it and put in an opening so I can add more fuel and cut the base out.

Considering wood gas burner 2.0 will have the cat food can sticking further out to act as pot holder and jet burner. Might need to put something on the bottom of it to help support any pots on top. Thinking maybe a couple of short nuts and bolts. It should also allow more airflow but reduce the combustion chamber. So some balancing out to do.

This has just been a bit of fun for me, something to do on a Sunday afternoon. So there's no basis in engineering or science to back any of this up. I look forward to seeing proper versions from you guys.
