legwear for wet weather

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Ive got a pair of Haglofs Mid Fjell pants, and also have the same in shorts. Theyre extremely quick drying and hardwearing. For winter conditions, or when its really muddy/wet and the brush is thick i use a pair of OR gaiters.

I've been using Yak drytrowsers that I picked up second hand a few years ago. Got them for the canoe but they just took over and are the only waterproofs I ever lift these days.
The leg seals are a footer but once they're on you have a gaiter-like seal over high boots.

Fancy a pair of Palm Vipers. Like the look of the 'normal' waistband and they're a nice cut.

[Edit - Sorry, didn't read the post properly, just seen the title and lurched right in. These aren't what you're after - they get chilly against the legs if you wear them on their own, you really wan't long-johns at least under them.]

The Haglofs Fjell "Pants" (in the US sense...) are very good, as are the more expensive Rugged Mountain Pants. For the winter, Fjallraven make some Hydratic-lined hunting trousers which I also like.

In general I find I always need a good pair of overtrousers if its raining properly. The Norrona recon ones are superb as are the Dutch surplus Goretex ones.

I second the vote for the Haglöfs Rugged Mountain Pants. The FlexAble® knee reinforcement is very water resistant and covers a large portion of the front of your leg, which always seems to be the wettest part of me on soggy days, and the Climatic fabric dries very fast. I also wear a pair of short Páramo gaiters and this seems to be a decent combination for wet weather without the need for sweaty waterproof trousers.

Depends... A lot of the time I wear BA lightweights and keep a pair of Berghaus overtrousers in my bag, but if I want something seriously wear and thorn resistant, I have a pair of Filson Double Hunting Pants... Hard to get in the UK though.
