SWMBO is after a knitting project for the winter. She's already made enough wooly hats, so I was wondering about something more ambitious. I've always fancied one of the Swanndri hooded smock-type jackets, but I gather that these are not what they used to be. Now I know the Swanndris are made from woven as opposed to knitted wool, but how about trying a similar garment knitted and shrunk like dachstein mitts? It'd likely be damned heavy, but pretty good for winter camping.
So, my question is: how much do wool garments shrink when hot-washed (I believe dachsteins are actually boiled?). In any event, if she has a go, I think a test patch should be knitted first to see how much the batch she uses will shrink.
Anyone tried similar before, or got any ideas/suggestions?
cheers

Some nice wooly base layers would be useful.

Something along the lines of the Ullfrotte 200 & 400g tops.

She should be able to pick up some decent merino somewhere.
