Looking at all the knifes on the market, I notice that near universally they have a small ricasso on the blade near the handle. Why? What is the advantage of the ricasso in use?

Thanks

I'm no expert (handled a couple of blades) but I have a theory. Mora knives have an edge that goes all the way into the handle. I can't sharpen my Moras without the stone scoring the plastic at the end of the handle. I'm not bothered on the cheap knives but I would be on an expensive one. My Fieldcrafters do have a ricasso so when they've seen the stone there is no score on the wooden handles.
Might not be the real reason but it is something I consider.

The grinds gotta start somewhere. I tend to make my handles get up close to where the grind starts where possible.
