Knife comp entry...Knife complete

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Like I said over on NB, it's nice to see somebody making a knife that's not just another boring scandi! At last a WIP on a proper knife with proper geometry :pokenest:

Next time, radius the internal corners of the tang/blade juntion. The sharp corners generate stress risers that can cause the blade to snap at that point; which is why the cheap nasty imported blades have given stick tangs an unfair rep for not being as strong as a full tang

yup, absolutely. stress risers bad, very bad...

That bolster is inspired!!!

yup, absolutely, bolster good, very good!

cheers, and.

I was gonna do the handle a hex shape, but thought it might look odd where it meets the bolster. The cross section will follow the shape though :)

Looks about bob on. God to have a guard on an arkansas toothpick :)

If she comes up like she looks now, thats going to be one sweet knife

Theres going be a delay finishing this as i tried to drill through the handle and tang with a cobalt bit and it just bounced off. Gutted lol, need to wait for a carbide bit to arrive.

You'll have deserved a bottle from each and every one of us lurking thread-stalkers by the time its complete! Gonna look a real treat, I'm glad you've decided to take your time even at the expense of entering in the competition, though :) Can't rush a good job!

Heres hoping....

The handle is rough shaped now. Next step is a careful hand finish so as not to lose the definition.

first the flats were shaped to match the bolster, i did this free hand on the belt.

Then i bevelled the top corners and around the rear of the handle.

I was going to bevel the bottom of the handle too, but i couldn't get to it on the machines due to the guard...grrr. So i rounded it underneath instead, which makes the handle very comfortable.

This is how it looks now, ready for the next stage. The grain on this is lovely, it has a translucent effect when held in the light.
