Jam jar lantern.

This isn't technically a bushcraft item but some folks on here might like it anyhow.

Me and a friend made a couple of lanterns out of old jam jars by whittling down scraps of pine with our knives. They work well enough for our tents. Give off quite a decent amount of light and are very sturdy (have to be, since they will get knocked about in the kit bag a lot... )

Well, for a jam jar, I suppose. =P
It's just how they turned out with the materials I had around the house. Haven't figured out a way to make them more rainproof yet. Perhaps some sort of metal curved roof...

just get the lid and punch half a dozen holes in it and put it back on the jam jar

Be careful with those. If you knock or tilt them so that the flame is below or touching the glass, they are prone to shattering.
