<snip>.. my mind keeps turning to the bells-and-whistles that "I just might need"..

I know that I go overboard with the amount of kit I take - but if I ain't got it with me I won't be able to use it :lmao:

I'm going on two trips next year that I going to really strip my kit down to essentials - which should be very interesting to see how I cope.

Thing is Phil, not so long ago I would have looked at that photo and think, you've forgotten a, b, c, etc almost all the way up to z.

These days I do try and keep the kit list down, especially if I'm having to walk.

Age is a terrible thing :D

Hi David,

It's dreadful catering for the "What if...?" scenario and it's dead aweful being in the wilds having forgotten something essential - like the wife :lmao:

BTW - my sleeping bag take up 1/3 of my bergen, lumpy old thing. Imagine what else I could get in my bergen with a smaller s/bag!!!

My biggest problem these days is calories, I enjoy good cooking in the field and as a result always take more food, seasoning and little luxuries that I need.

But I figure if I'm expending all this energy carrying stuff I may as well enjoy more than just a good nights kip

David

My problem is that for meets I tend to use my van as an extention of my pockets.

I may not have it on site but it's in the van....I'll just go and get it.....

By the end of the weekend most of it has migrated to my bivvi area anyway and then it takes ages to get it all back to the van.

i had landrovers for over 15 years, they all turned into mobile sheds!!! The worst one was when the police stopped me and told to remove the 6” vice from the front bumper. :o It got moved to the rear bumper. ;) I now drive an estate car and I am not quit as bad as I was.

I normally carry far too much kit while out wandering as I'm usually on my own, but I went on a course with Woodland survival crafts and had to fly over so I only had a limited amount of space/weight. I had to lay out all the kit I wanted to take and see what I could fit into my luggage for the plane. I took less than usual but enough for the week away.

im going to the scottish meet for the first time this week, and since im not really a 'bushcrafter' i'll be kipping in a tent, and i'll have very little in the way of crafty kit with me. so i'll get it all in me rucksack - no problem.

i might bring some cooking kit though and some produce from the farm, that is if theres any room left on the fire beside waylands cauldrons... :o

Yeah, but you're also limited by all the other stuff I'm putting in the car... ;)

Last time I had the Sabre 45 and one side pocket. This time it'll be 2 side pockets, bow, arrows, target, guitar...

oh yeah, i forgot about the djembi and the projumps and the spices too.

A decent head torch is my prefered torch, I have a Petzl Moya (or something spelt like that :D) and supplement that with a mini maglight (though I can't remember the last time I used it)

my problem is i take very little kit but dont take mush notice of the wieght tho last time in wales i managed to keep it down to 35 pounds
of course bein young and fit i cant take whatever wieght i can put in a bag i really feel for people who nolonger can :lmao:

Oh that's real nice of you Woods Wanderer. :bluThinki

Just remember that it will happen to you one day and then some younger, fitter individual will look at you and make a smart remark. :D

However all is not lost, with age comes wisdom (usually).

I will leave it there as I'm sure some of our other "older" members would also like to say a few words.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

My father said to me twenty five years ago as I hefted on a pack on my back, I already had a baby in a sling on my front......"You can damage yourself just as quick as you like, remember your joints have to last a lifetime." Then he hirpled away making comments like, "I wish someone had told 'me' that forty years ago." :D Somedays, I wish I'd listened harder :o but I enjoyed being strong and fit.

Cheers,
Toddy

I have now got tot he stage were for normal trips I have just a little more than I should have taken but I am usually in a canoe. For meet ups I still take way to much. I was getting better but both daughters are coming to this one so that means a whole range of just in case additions to make sure they are not cold or unhappy at any point.

A while ago, I made a conscious choice for aches and memories over comfort and regret.
Which is probably why I can't close my fist fully.

And as for wisdom coming with age, why do I still carry too much ?

The Maglite has got to be upgraded to something a lot smaller - its the 4 x D Cell version! :)

Anybody got any suggestions as to what I should replace it with?

Phil.
I would go for an INOVA T4 it is not cheap but well worth the money a truly excellent torch and it should fit in your pocket!
