I had looked at these and in my EDC mind I thought I could make one of those with bits and pieces I have lying around. What's it for? Well a wee survival kit to carry in yr pocket, not because I need it but I thought it'd be nice to have. I had to buy one or two bits, the pouch (99p), the steel wire (£1.30) and the water 'bottle' (£2.30). It's a little bigger and heavier than the Doug Ritter offering but I included a few plasters, a bigger pencil, a SAK and some matches from a rat pack.

Looks good. I think if you're going to carry a kit like this, a soft pouch like this is preferable to a hard tin.

True enough, though a kit like this doesn't preclude the carrying of any other equipment, and yes I've boiled water in a tobacco tin before now!

The boiling water thing is an issue. In the original speil it says he can boil water in the tinfoil I havent tried it myself. I didn't show them but I did include purification tablets. I always carry a hankie so could pre-filter then purifier. The pouch was £1.99 from eBay and reasonable, it has three zip lock closures then a Velcro to hold it over. What I didn't put in and I've just thought of it but I need to put some cash in it and maybe a USB with data on it.

I did the carry a kit in a tin (URSA) everywhere back in the 80's. Found it recently. Time capsule! took me right back.
I'm a bit more pragmatic and measured these days. Still can see the sense in a few well chosen items tho'.
Thanks for this, will investigate a bit further.
Plus its always good making up kits!! lol
