Bought this at a vide grenier (bootfair) a week or so ago and haven't had much luck finding info about the makers name. Can you help?

Hello
French pattern quite old no idea of date,I read somewhere that Goldenberg made french wood block planes too, Goldenberg and company started making hardware and edged tools around 1851( Alsace) merged with another company in 1924 then merged with peugeot freres and ceased in the mid 80s when Stanley took them over.Forgive me for rambling on , but i hope this helps.

Thanks for the info Darren. Had a serendipity moment today too. I was looking at some enamel pins (Badges) at a bootfair and saw Goldenberg with Stanley tools under it as their familier logo. Which would back up what you said about them being bought out. Anyway mucho thanks for what you were able to share

Peugeot Freres literally means Peugeot Brothers and a lot of the drawknifes I've been finding have been made by them. They're synonymous with quality tools.

By the look of this axe, and from what you said about the company being taken over in 1924, I'd say it's aged well, except for the chip on the chin, it hardly has any pitting and the hammer face is smooth.

Thanks for the compliments for it, yeah it's very nice. Well chuffed with it.

To Scorpio, hmmm might keep it, just cos' I can :nana:

hey biker, i got myself a lovely Peugeot Freres draw knife for just £2 at a bootfair last week:D
do you know if peugeot freres is connected to peugeot cars? just curious:)

Lucky you mate! Most sellers over here hear my accent assume I'm rich and charge accordingly. I've gotten to the stage now I just hold it up and raise an eyebrow like Roger Moore. Seems to work as they kick themselves when I open my gob to say thanks. Still a cheap price though, mostly about €4 for a knife depending on the condition. Most times it's the handles that have gone rotton with woodworm.

As to your question, I really don't know. I'll try and find out, got two french mates coming by this evening for a natter so I'll ask them. I also have an electric chainsaw that is made by Peugeot and that name is written as the car logo, so perhaps they are connected.
