Seems like a good time to ask, what with everyone buying new Laplanders off Amazon... (Not that you'll need to worry soon, the blades do last quite well ;))

Anybody know of a good cheap source for replacement blades for my trusty old Laplander? My current blade is definitely getting a bit past its best...

I'm sure you can get the blades more cheaply than that - plus I really resent buying a new saw when all I need is a new blade. Replaceable blades are one of the reasons I bought it in the first place.

Yeah, it's an option... I was just kinda hoping someone would have a cheaper source. Plus I prefer to buy from smaller, individually-owned businesses rather than multi-nationals where reasonably practical.

I bought my replacement blade from Survival School - on their website (http://www.survivalschool.co.uk/acatalog/Products_with_Optional_Extras.html) it's listed currently at £15 inc VAT and postage.

Another source for laplanders is 'TooledUp' - I've bought stuff from them before as well.

The laplander is currently £18.53 inc VAT (http://www.tool-up.co.uk/shop/diy/SAN396LAP.html) They don't list a spare blade for the laplander specifically, but there is another saw very simlar (396-HP) and the replacement blade for that is £9.55 inc VAT (http://www.tool-up.co.uk/shop/diy/SAN396HPB.html)

Having looked at the Bahco website, the Laplander is listed (under woodworking tools!) as the 396-LAP:

A general-purpose folding saw for cutting both green and dry wood, plastic, bone, etc. Specially designed for wild-life enthusiasts, hunters and campers.
XT toothing, 7 TPI. Blade specially coated for rust protection and low friction.
Two-component plastic handle for perfect grip, with leather strap. Safety lock, locks blade in both the open and closed position.

Any of the other 396-xx blades will fit each other. The differences are:

396-HP - for hard or dry wood
396-JS - for green wood
396-JT - for soft or green wood

Was reading the information regarding the 396-HP and it says its designed for green and dry wood. Maybe that would actually be a better blade than the standard 396 blade. :dunno:

You can buy that saw plus a FOC spare blade for £18.39 here: http://www.tooled-up.com/ManProduct.asp?PID=110158

So thats two blades plus a spare handle for less than £20.

Any idea if this blade would actually perform better than the standard 396 saw?

Strong two-component plastic handle with comfortable grip.
Safety lock both in opened and closed position.

Folding saws, 396-JS

Folding pruning saw with JS toothing blade for a faster cut in green wood. Strong two-component plastic handle with comfortable grip. Safety lock both in opened and closed position.
Blade with Hard Point teeth.

Folding saws, 396-JT
Folding pruning saw with special toothing for soft or green wood for fast and clean cut.
Strong two-component plastic handle with comfortable grip.
Safety lock in both open and closed position.
