Hello folks. Glad to be here on the forums and at the BCUK site. And a great site it is. As most folks here, I am interested in things bushcrafty, but from a Canadian perspective, more like Northern Bushcraft.
About myself, I'm a single dad( I'm 50, yikes :0 ) with a lovely 6 year old daughter(Meg.)
I live in Canada near our country's largest city(Toronto, yuk). I've been into bushcrafting and primitive skills most of my life, before I guess bushcrafting had a name?!
I've spent most of my youth, and up till my daughter was born in Northern Ontario, and hope to move/retire there before I get too decrepid!
My family was originally from England(my grandmother moved to Canada between the wars). Our family came from Brighton I believe, and owned a small hotel there until the depression(not sure of the name of the hotel though).
For those from that area my grandmothers maiden name was Lawrence, and married name Feast. Lawrence name apperently had a long tradition in Her Majesty's Royal Navy.
One day I'm looking forward to walking/hike the South Downs, and before I'm too old, and when my daughters older, I would like to attempt to walk: Norfolk Coastal Path-Suffolk Coastal Path-Southdowns Way-Southwest Coast Path...oh, did I mention I'm into walking/hiking... ;)
Anyway that's it for now. Looking forward to chatting with you all, and exchanging info. Ta for now.
Cheers
Alex

Hi PHG welcome to the site

I`ve went to Canada`s west coast then down the Rockies last year and I thought it was awesome. Your a lucky man to live over there. Ever fancy a house/life swap let me know :D

Welcome to the forum. I was in Toronto earlier this year. Quite pleasant as cities go.

Drove out to Tweed to have a look at canoes. Nice part of the world.

I was hoping to see a porcupine but alas only a road kill.

Welcome, yes it is a great site . Just been to Toronto myself stayed with my mate in Oshawa.
Great city fantastic country lovely people......just wish I could persuade the missus to emigrate!
Dave:) :)

Thanks all. Shewie, the Rockies are something. So that was a house/WIFE swap right? ;)
Wayne,it's a shame, you should have driven to a town called Dwight near Algonquin Prov. Park, it has the best canoe museum in N. America seeing that you're interested in canoes...Porcupines are interesting if you have not seen them before, but they are real pests in the wilds, eating ANYTHING that has a salt taste, like the break lines of my vehicle when I was camping in the wilderness up north. Got back to my truck after a week found I had no fluid...you can imagine the tow truck charges...so Porcupines and I have an understanding, they dont chew my breaks, I dont put them in the stew!
TommyTC, you and all the other bushcrafters are always welcome in Canada, means more mates to go into the bush with. ;)
Cheers

hi Alex,
after the wilds of Canada you may find the UK hikes you mentioned a bit of an anti-climax, wouldn't ever want to put you off, this island is great, but its hard to walk for a day in southern uk without coming across roads etc. then again, visiting the little towns etc can be pretty nice.
Most of us here would be very jealous of the open space you have there - sounds like you've had a good time out in it...except for the porcupine mechanics :)

Welcome. Lots of the stuff I've learned here applies equally well in Canada, except that we seem to have a lot more space.

I remember the porcupines chewing on the tv antenna when I was growing up in Haliburton. Kind of lulls you to sleep like nails on a blackboard. Guess they didn't have enough aluminum in their diet?

Perpetual and Mungo, go to see there are a few of us here in and about T.O. I'm envious of the UK folks and their Bushmoots, I haven't found anything like that around these parts. My brother in B.C. says there is all kinds out there, but I don't fancy heading all the way over to B.C., way too far to travel.

I've just worked out that as the crow flies, I am closer to you (3408 miles) than you are to parts of mainland Alaska.

Sorry :o

It's true, Canada is a huge country, most of it empty(of people that is). Matt, it almost makes more sense to fly out to a UK Bushmoot, than visit my brother in B.C....go figure.

If I had the money, and time off from work, I'd be there. As it stands, I'm planning a trip to the UK with my daughter in a couple of years. I'm going to coordinate it with that years bushmoot...see you there. ;)
