Anyone had any ideas in terms of creating interesting puzzle based Geocaches?
I had a go at Geocaching 18 years ago. I forget what the clue was but I remember it was something along the lines of a crossword style clue. So even once we had found the location of the cache it still took us a while to solve the clue and actually look in the right place to find it. It was a fun afternoon.

So maybe you could consider introducing some kind of crossword style clue. Or were you thinking of having more of a physical puzzle of some kind?

There were/are various geocache apps out there, used a few of them years ago, some free, some freemium, not sure they would even still work or even be any use in this case.
Suppose one could use a map based puzzle to find the cache, mix of orienteering and geo cache, with clues built into the cache for the next stage.

W3W gives you loads of opportunities for puzzles and clues.

Unfortunately W3W have taken some of the fun out of the free app and put it behind a paywall.
The basics are still free though.

What you thinking - bit of wordsmith puzzle solving or a mechanical idea?

Yeah - I like all those things to be honest and looking at the Geocaches online people have clearly put a lot of effort into making them entertaining.

I was talking to a friend about what sort of Geocache he enjoyed the most for finding and writing in the log.
To me geocaches seem to fall into at least three different categories

1) Hidden , Camouflaged , small - hard to find.

2) Puzzle based. Cryptic , number , grid ref , physical interaction.

3) Mechanical based in some way - turn this , move that , slide this . tap that with a magnet.

I guess if you combined two of those you'd have a fourth and fifth category.

I do have an idea for something but I think its an ideal little fun distraction for some of the shed based engineers out there.

To add - common elements that seem to get included into more complex Geocaches seem to be:-

Water ( Raising something by pouring water in )
Magnets ( moving internal latches or moving internal hidden parts )
Battery ( BYOB ) - To power a circuit.

Sure there are others but that will do for a bit.
