Hi everyone,
I have an expedition starting on 17'th of this month. It's an ethnology expedition to a small village, to gather folklore. We are going around 30 people there and will be staying outdoors most of the time (one week). Maybe you know some games that are nice to play outside while camping or some other attractions from your own experience?

Offering "Kendal mint cake" around always used to occupy us.....especially when it has got mixed up with your hexy! :D

Seriously though, how about a deck of waterproof playing cards?

How about taking (or making new ones as you go - as big as you like) boards and a set of pieces to play Nine (or 3, 5, 6 or 12) Mans Morris, Fox & Geese and some of the smaller Tafl games?

These are simple games needing simple boards and pieces, with rules that are easy to pick up, but still require a bit (or a lot!) of strategy to play well. They're also very old, and have survived the tests of time.

here's a link to a site that commercially produces versions of these (I've no connection to them), although with very little skill it's easy to make all the bits you need: http://www.gothicgreenoak.co.uk/games.html

the greatest game i have ever played simples as

rules

1 get bladdered
2 stand in a circle a armz lengh apart from the next competitor
3 stand perfectly still and on one leg not touching anyone else
4 last man standing on one leg wins

How about rabbit sticks.
Everyone carves their own rabbit stick x 3 (or if you're not being bushy on your expedition just get everyone to find 3 x fairly hefty throwable sticks each) and set up a pyramid of cans (partially fill with some sand/water/mud etc if it's a bit windy or they'll keep blowing over) If sticks are in short supply people can share sticks. You need to mark a line people have to throw from (like in darts) and then set up the cans about 30 yards away.
I've never played this with as many as 30 people as you'll have in your group but maybe you could have a knockout competition, draw names as to who will play who,( a bit like the FA cup) and have a couple of can pyramids set up and do a knockout competiton with quarter and semi finals, 3rd place play off and then the big final.
1 point per can knocked over, everyone gets 3 x 3 throws per round (alternating @ 3 throws per go or it gets boring for the person waiting) the opponent waits behind or to the side of the cans and re-stacks them for his go.
It's very simple and fun. It can get competitive and there's usually some lighthearted abuse from the sidelines and banter that emerges.
For some added intetrest everyone can stick 10p 50p or £1 into a kitty for the winner or 1st 2nd and 3rd places share the spoils, obviously the greater portion goes to the winner, 2nd place 3rd place descending.
I've played this lots of times with groups. You need next to nothing to play it, and all you do need is free. I've always had a laugh playing this.
(side arm throw is most effective. If you do an over head throw the stick tends to dig in the ground. With the side arm throw the stick stays parallel with the ground and spins parallel through the air)
