Useful info' but it would benefit from having a welt along the front edge and bottom lip

That way it would protect the cutting edge from the rivets or stitching.

3-4mm would be fine for all of it.

If I was making one of these I'd make the outer from 2 - 3mm leather and the Welt from a thicker bit say 4 - 5mm.

To make the welt I'd use a compass set to about 12mm and scribe a line along the front edge and the bottom bit and cut a peice that shape (bit like a 12mm wide L shape). Just make sure that the axe fits with the welt in place as you may need to make it a bit deeper to allow for the lenght of the head.
