I have been cutting sticks to heat the house for a couple of years now, and wakened one morning last week thinking about an old fashoned Dog Grate....would it give off more heat?
So I gathered up a few bits of steel and knocked up my own prototype to experiment with...it does actually throw more heat into the room, I just need to do a few small alterations, and I think I'm there!

As you can see in the pic you get much more red hot clinker facing into the room and not burried under the sticks.
