Dangerous plants

Europe
Was watching a program recently on plants that are harmful to humans through contact. It was a US program so only really mentioned Poison Oak, Poison Ivy, and the like. But it got me thinking, in the UK and Northwestern Europe, other than stinging nettles and the now naturalised Giant Hogweed, are there any other plants that can cause injury through contact (not including thorned/prickled plants).

Just curious.

Not sure about Europe but even in the US, poison oak and poison ivy aren't the only ones. We also have poison sumac and stinging nettles. As well as stinging golf ball plants, poison hemlock (not native but established) cow parsnip, giant hogweed, and spurges.

That's a heck of a list Colin, and it's confusing, isn't it ? After all some folks are allergic to strawberries, but it doesn't make them a candidate for the 'poisonous' list…..and parsnips are good food, yet they're on the list too.

I take Julia's point though, and think that that and Goat's reply are a good basis for the UK.

Out and about, what not to touch ?

Cuckoo pint/Lords and Ladies (lovely bright tasty-looking berries, and a starch rich root that needs very careful preparation. It's not only toxic, but it causes hellish dermatitis)
Giant hogweed (sap blisters skin in sunlight, and that's any sunlight. Old, dry, stem tubes are fine)
Hemlock water dropwort (just don't. It's the most poisonous British plant)
Laburnum (it's beautiful, but it's all poisonous, and the 'peas' tempt the unwary)
https://chempics.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/common-laburnum-laburnum-anagyroides/
Nettles (unless it's intentional :) )
Ragwort (horrible stuff, good dye, and a food plant for many butterflies, toxic weed of pasture)
Spurges (the milky sap is bad news, it burns eyes, and it's persistent)http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/gardening-blog/2013/mar/27/euphorbia-amygdaloides-wood-spurge
Yew (fruits apart. Lovely timber, don't handle fresh and then eat without washing)

I like this thread Julia :) I like it's timeliness, and it would be excellent if folks would add to the list.
Not just names, but a wee comment too that helps stick things in the mind.

atb,
Mary

Parsnip leaves contain the same chemical as giant hogweed and have been known to burn people from mere contact, me included.

Seems to be some contradictory information about aloe: www.drugs.com/npp/aloe.html We most often use it topically as an antibiotic or as a sunburn relief.

I was also surprised by that, so I looked further. http://www.livestrong.com/article/446586-is-the-aloe-vera-plant-toxic/

Hi Mary, I was surprised at the length of the RHS list too, but thought it worth mentioning. :)
The woods that the Suffolk group use, used to be full of Dogs Mercury. But we have been slowly clearing it.

did know you can get that many poisonous plants in Europe.....

I did notice taro on the list ( will read in detail later, just a quick look now....):
did not know it can be grown in Europe and which part is dangerous?! I know its a food plant in Japan, Korea and the pacific and I ate it without side effects.....

Tomatoes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and others are also a food plant but the leaves are poisonous (to ingest) as they're similar to nightshade.

……but do we find parsnips, sweet potatoes and aloe when out there here ?

Not usually.

Dog's Mercury though; you could add that to the list please Colin ?

I think you can add rhubarb to the list above, too: the leaves are poisonous.....

Are they poisonous on contact? If I walked through a rhubarb field wearing shorts would my legs have an adverse reaction? That's the reasoning behind this thread, stuff that you might brush past when walking, or sit on by mistake. Rather than ingestion.

Maybe. Maybe not. Aloe Vera is thought to be extinct in the wild but there are over 500 other species of Aloe and in turn they are all succulents (which are wide spread) so I suppose it's possible?

Is there a definitive pocket guide or guides out there to help identify these? I can just about tell the difference between a flower and a tree, plants are the wife's thing, I've never been any good at it.

See Julia's reply though.

Aloe isn't native here, but the houseleek is and it's every bit as good :) Poison oak, ivy and sumac…..I've never, ever, seen them. Tbh I think those are plants you can keep that side of the Atlantic :D
