Court fine over Bebo sword image

If it`s the same story as this one then I`m not surprised he`s been nicked. Not just posing with a sword by the sound of it.

As far as I know, the ownership of a sword is not acctualy illegal. There are rules on some preventing their purchase, but if you allready have it it's legal. Carrying one outside is a different question, But if the pictures where taken inside the owners home there is nothing stopping it (that I'm aware of).
A simmilar situation exists with flick knives, and telescopic batons. both are legal to own, but maynot be sold, lent, hired, bought, imported or produced. It would also be illegal to carry one.
The second article mentions pictures of them with alcohol, which could lead to prosecution (under 16's maynot drink alcohol except in thier own home, under parental supervision. and between 16 and 18 alcohol may only be drunk with a meal, and only beer, wine or simmilar (as I understand it, never had confirmation on that bit))
Probably turn out to be "behaviour likely to breach the public peace" or "behaviour likely to incite violence"
The gossip I heard was that it was a gang of neds showing off their chibs, and proclaiming their willingness to use said chibs against other gangs, that caused the investigation.

It was on the radio here today, they mentioned that the photo's were taken in a public park, which may have had something to do with it
in a public park they need a legaly valid reason to carry, same as if you had a locking blade leatherman. wonder what reason you could have for a broadsword down your trousers?
i saw a documentary just last week about this very thing.it was about a group of Glasgow detectives whose sole job is to trawl the internet ,bebo etc looking for these neds posing like this and when they are recognised ,it,s a dawn raid with a dynamic hammer to take the door off.i watched it and thought it was good something is being done about these idiots, but at the same time thought it was maybe a bit OTT ,some of them were posing outside and some were in there bedrooms etc
There are no laws against owning a sword in Scotland as yet, however it would be illegal to brandish a sword in a public place without a very very good excuse, i.e public re-enactment that has been set up. About a year or so ago there was a consultation with the public and groups who do use swords legitimately about the sale of swords and the laws that can be applied to them. I do not know what the outcome was but there were talks about licences etc.
But the main thing is, there are legit reasons for owning one. I myself own two and used to participate in Historical European Swordsmanship which was the study of old manuscripts on how to use the sword etc. Other people own them for decoration or re-enactment.
It is the idiots that go running about the streets with them causing trouble that are the real problem.
Does this mean we should stop posting pics on here with us and our knives? We are outside with a sharp object?

I used to live in the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh and there used to regularly be a bunch of re-enaction nuts down in the park opposite us banging away at each other with Broadswords and daggers and such.
Everyone loved it and there was never any hassle from coppers or neds.
Wonder if they still do it?
Oh and I had thoughts on Jessie Rae too. He would be a prime candidate for flingin' a blade about.
