Seasoned hardwood locally sourced for the hearth at home - no question
Standing or recently fallen deadwood in the woods if you have permission - ideal

But, dont always camp in the woods, dont always have permission to collect, cannot always source a local supplier - so what are the alternatives as back up apart from gas / petrol?

Has anyone tried any ready made compressed wood logs eg
http://www.farmfuels.com/Products/Heat-Logs/
http://www.certainlywood.co.uk/products/blaze_away_logs.htm
http://www.myecostore.co.uk/EcoHouseholdProducts/HeatLogs.html

Anyone any experience of these - are they worth keeping a few of in the back of the truck, in a dry bag in the canoe ? (I am not talking about the bryant & may things full of parafin that stink btw)

Has anyone any experience of compressed peat from the emerald isle - we were on hols in ireland in May and while filling up with a final tank of diesel noticed the garage selling compressed peat briquettes like these http://www.michaelkings.co.uk/index.html?lang=en-uk&target=d3.html - thought they may be worth a try with my final handful of eros so threw them in the back of the car. Tried a couple on a fire the other night - smoke city - plenty of aroma for everyone within a square mile! Eventually settled to a good glow, but not hot - also not so sure about the envirnmental credetials of peat burning, but saw plenty of turves being cut and dried around Conemara.

Finally has anyone tried these "logmakers" http://www.itmustbegreen.co.uk/acatalog/hh.html?gclid=CJ6jttur25QCFQvilAodYiqTjw ??

Thoughts or expereinces good to hear

Thanks

Hey ye,

Yeah I have used peat in the past. I get a bag of it every christmas of my uncle to have a nice cosy fire at home. He cuts his own turf from the bog.

I have also used the peat briquettes you talk about. They're a pain in the bottom to carry but I have done so If Im not travelling too far. The company that makes them is called Bord na Móna ( http://www.bnm.ie/fuels/index.jsp )

I havent found them too smokey. They do give a great smell. Nothing like the sent of a turf fire.
