Come on then show us your baby

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I'd love to be able to show you a blade or several (My collection is probably similar to Hoodoo's) but I cannot for the life of me work out how I'm supposed to post pictures on the forum. Do I need to be a paid up member to do so ? If not, can anyone tell me how it's done?

I have four knives at the mo, all Norwegian factory knives.
Firstly, a Helle Jegermester, which I used to own another before it got nicked with everything else. I loved this knife so much I wasted no time in ordering another. It's big, but slices better than anything I've ever used, including any and all kitchen knives.

Secondly, a Helle Fjellmann. This is a general use knife, similar in design to the various woodlores, bisons, bearclaws, etc that most people have. I daresay I've condemned myself to death by lumping those knives together (I'm not a member of BB and don't want to be :) ) but there you go. It's quite thick, has a lovely handle, although the sheath is a little loose.

Thirdly, a Brusletto Rognald. Got this one partly because it's a lovely carver and user for delicate work. It's quite thick for such a small blade, and mine at least is tempered very hard - I have (embarrassed look) managed to snap the very tip when carving, which was disappointing :( Also the sheath is the worst sheath I have ever used.

Fourthly, and not really a knife, I've a Helle Lappland. This is a Sami knife, or Leuku. It's more to replace an axe than a billhook or parang (you don't get much in the way of thick grasses to cut in Lappland :lmao: ), and is used with the wrist and forearm. It uses strength rather than weight, which makes you very tired but I think gives you more control. Its application is thus limited by your strength. I am much happier using one than an axe, although I'm a real axe novice.
In the shop, the choice was between the Helle Lappland and Strømeng Leuku. I went for the Helle although it was slightly damaged and had a slightly less well shaped blade as it had a much thicker handle (number one injury source is the blade flying out of sweaty hands, hardly helped by the manufacturers putting varnish on them!), a better quality blade and a battoning plate. Love this knife :)

This is mine, my first handmade knife . The blade is forged from crane cable and the handle and sheath were done by Dave Barker to a size which suits my larger than average hands  The blade is a touch over 11 cm and is 28 mm across, the handle is almost 14.5 cm long (about 4.5" x 1.1", handle is about 5.7"), with the balance point laying around ( maybe slightly behind) the index finger

Hmmm, knife display time :D

They look more battered now than in this older pic.

Or, how about this?

Or this?

The Alan Wood Woodlore is my absolute favorite, now that it's bevel is flattened. But the WS version sees regular use also.

Heres my precious, lol not my exact one but I have the same model and I love it!

I made a couple of modifications to it, I removed some of the bottom at the end to fit my hands and filed the top of the blade closest to the handle so it would be more comfterable for my thumb that seems to naturally go there when I do intricate stuff.

Come on then show me your knives, and specs, and why you choose it??

This one is my current favourite, but then I only made it about 3 weeks ago...

Nice utility knife, with a pattern-welded blade and birch/antler handle. Excellent balance and fits my hand like a glove.

This one I made last week, it is a superb wood carver...
