Alone now.
So we finally arrived back after 14 years gone and I'm like a fish out of water on some things. Car insurance being one of them, it seems there's so much choice it's midboggling. Does anyone have any input as to what are good companies to look at and conversely which I should avoid like the plague?

We will be looking to get a car in about a week so any help is appreciated, Thanks everyone.

Try a broker first, they will find you the cheapest(?)

(I use kwikfit)

Then, when you have your quote, go to the insurers directly.

on-line search to narrow it down, they'll give you a list of quotes and then you're on the phone for ages and there's a good chance the quote will go up a little bit (although not always) and then when you've had enough of them calling you and you sitting giving the same details again and again you'll opt for one just to get it over and done and then you'll sit back and feel good it's sorted, even if it wasn't the cheapest, it will be done....

can you tell that we've just been looking for insurance, finally had enough yesterday and just said, that one and that one (one car & one pickup)

Good luck with it :D

Well I have used mee3kat for the last few years, and apart from the toys for grandchildren, I have been paying £150 per annum with protected no claims, no penalties or payments at all for claims. A simple matter to browse & check all quotes, then at my leisure phone my preferred insurer's number, with the meerkat ref number - a matter of minutes.
The best quotes and service for the last 2 years have been Liverpool Victoria - their renewal offer was always higher than their meerkat quote tho!

Use more than one comparison website to look for insurance.

Not all insurance companies appear on all the comparison sites and the prices can vary for the same company on different sites as well

I use saga for my wife's car not always the cheapest but always good customer service. Also when you take the car into Europe you take your full policy benefits for any length of time at no cost. Providing the car is legal in the UK.

Shouldn't that true of any E.U. country? I mean wasn't that part of the whole point of the E.U? Uninterrupted cross border travel and commerce between member countries?

For the cheapest quotes, Money Supermarket usually wins. Once you've entered details, you'll get 20 brokers phone you instantly, all falling over themselves to get the work and quoting from the companies that don't list on comparison sites. Done this for the last 7 years, always works well.

You can take your car into any E.U. country without any problem but some car insurances charge extra or put restrictions on cover outside of the UK

Do the compare websites to get an idea.
Then as Tony says just pick one and beat them down with the cheapest quote you got from said sites. That's what I do with the missus car.
With mine being an import and modified integra I use a specialist firm which certainly isn't the cheapest but covers me for mods, track days and like for like parts costs.

Even after all that my better half had her car seized and towed last week as the police said we had no insurance!

Apologies from the insurance company letters admitting guilt and a few hundred in impound fees and we have our car back! Been an interesting week.....

Avoid brokers like the plague!

PS, anyone beat £150 pa, with protected NCD, with 0 excesses, for any car? (Mine's a Honda HRV 4x4)
Remember, sometimes comprehensive is cheaper than 3rd party fire & theft...
You can opt to have NO phone calls on some comparison sites = no pestering...

Accidentally putting the wrong phone number in will do that too :)

True but your only covered for a minimum of third party. Most policies charge extra for fully comp. and then restrict this cover for 30 to 60 days.

As with all things political......you are told you can do all these things.....but wait until you try it. For example going on a day trip to France.....sometimes they will insist on a passport, other times I've flashed my driving licence or when I was in, my military ID and had no problems, yet you can wonder from Spain to Poland and are unlikely to be asked for a passport.
Same with commerce, it's supposed to be a free market but you try bring back 20,000 cigarettes and tell them you bought them paying tax in Spain because they are cheaper (even after Spanish tax) and you intend to sell them in Birmingham and see how far you get! Lol

As regards to insurance, don't forget Direct Line....I've always found them reasonably priced BUT when things go wrong they are very quick to pay up and sort the claim....unlike others. Never know Direct Line to try to wriggle out of setting a claim. (no association etc).

Also, how you give the correct info is important. I found that if I say I am a tree surgeon then I am classed as a manual worker and offered one premium. However, if I tell them I am a company director, which I am....as listed at companies house and I own the business. I am offered a different rate......it seems a Managing Director is less of a driving risk than a manual worker! I have NOT lied in any way as that would firstly be illegal and secondly invalidate my insurance.....it's just "how" you answer the question truthfully :)

Yep, owned by AA & EXPENSIVE...

I suppose, buying a new car, you know about insurance bands? You can check how expensive a particular make & model will be BEFORE you buy and start getting insurance quotes...
