In the hope of having things to play with on our little weekend i was wondering if anyone knew what would be good to bring along to try making fire bows, it seems to be a theme that most of us would like to try. If we get a list of 'good bits' then maybe between us we can have enough for us all to play with?

Idea..?

Hey Tim

Not long now!

I noticed my name's down twice, once as claws6, and once as taws6....
taws6 (Paul) would like to come on Saturday !

I will PM everyone on the 'possibly interested' list if you'd like?

If your all having a good old wittle, would hazzle wands be of any use? There's a few in the garden I can harvet if anyone's interested? Should I bring a bit of birch bark too?

I've had a couple of goes with the fire bow, but can never manage to get the drill to spin right with the bow. I guess the string's too tight/ not tight enough, and something else might be wrong! If anyone got a set they've got working they could bring would be really appreciated. I guess paracord is suitable for the sring, I've got some spare if so...

Looking forward to meeting you all, and I'll appoligise now for forgetting your names!

Taws,
Have ammended my errors!
If you have some hazel a few sticks would be good - the way i see it the more bits we have to play with the more options we have, given that theres nothig to harvest on site bring as much as you like! If nothing else can make some whistles or do some bending and general whittlery!

Yeah names not my strongpoint either - i will not be doing any introductions!

Namebadges anyone... hehe

Should I PM the others??

Hi Taws6, cheers for the offer, Ive already PM them, (no response as yet!)

I think for a start, 6-7 people will be a nice number, hopefully we can raise this to 10-15 for future meets.. I'd hate to get on the scale of Rough Close (50-60 peeps down for that one.. hard to manage and keep tabs on everyone!)

So all in all, its looking like its going to be a Fire Drill workout session to start the fire.. then a good cookup of various food stuffs..

:campfire: ..The mission is for all to get the fire started by sun down :grouphug:.. If the drill doesnt work by then.. the fire steels, Jetboils and meths burners are coming out!!.. Im not going hungry!! :red:

Heres some vid's for you guys..
The Bow Drill Project - Bow - Part One
The Bow Drill Project - Hearth and Top Bearing - Part Two A
The Bow Drill Project - Hearth and Top Rock - Part Two B
The Bow Drill Project - Spindle - Part Three
How to Make a Bow Drill Fire - Overview and Technique - Part Four

Ill bring some hard woods for people to split for the workout session.. hazle rods I think will be good for the bow.. plus extra paracord

I'll have some paracord somewhere about my kit on the weekend, sorry but I don't have acess to much/any wood, or i'd bring some of that too. Any thing else required that I might be able to bring?

Nice set of vids Tim. I like the stone bearing block idea. Not sure on the ear wax or boggie lube for the end though, I think we'll all want to use our own bearing blocks!

I dont think I've got any good hearth wood, I'll have to see if I can find some, it'll probably be green though...

:red: Just came across Grange woods
http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm?lat=52.53068115534562&lon=0.06193029275659559&gz=17&oz=9&gt=2

Its near the March Golf course (on the next bend of the road).
It has a pond, 5 main wooded areas with loads of dead standing wood where the Woodland lot have cut trees down and then left them laying there. Loads of Sycamore and Birch (I don't think anyone has ever harvested any of the old bark off).
A lot of Hawthorn has been put up around the wooded areas so it forms natural wind breaks and the areas are thick enough to camp without being seen,
It says no fires or bonfires so all cooking and brew fires would have to be in containers and carried away, but enough wood up to a foot thick just laying there.
A tiny hole in a birch with a sycamore tap gave me a constant flow into my hand for a quick drink.
I reckon it would be a good place to meet some time over Easter. :drive:
Unfortunately no loos or taps so water carried in.
Anyone fancy it?
3rd April?

Nothing wrong with a shameless bump!! hehe.

Grange woods looks great, but it's just a bit far for me, Cambridge is over an hours drive from where I live, but I'm sure you guys'll enjoy it.

Final question on my shave horse - im not planning on bringing it as there hasnt been much interest - which makes it easier for me. Just wanted to make sure that no - one was really wanting to use it before i decide on other gubbins to stack in the car!
