Hi All,

I am looking to take a Bushcraft / Survival course to get the basic skills as I have no previous experience of the wilderness and after watching it on TV I feel I must get out there and try some of it.

I found the school below that seemed quite good but wondered if anybody on here had any reviews or information about them? I have searched but could not find any thing.

I appreciate your advice and any other schools that you could recommend would be a great help.

Many Thanks

Well they apear to be based in Scotland which isn't that close to Newbury.

Its a long way to go to imerse yourself into something new. But it depends how you feel about doing that.

There are a lot of schools more local to this area, and also people that would probably be more than willing to show you some skills foc.

In fact if you want to come out for a taster near basingstoke then feel free to drop me a PM/email whatever.

Hi mrsoco

Have you had a look at the list of schools and the areas they're in as that might help;
also there's a review section in which some are mentioned.

Schools: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/links/bushcraft-schools/
Reviews: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/reviews/

Probably a good (thorough, but time-consuming) thing to do might be to pick some
names of schools that seem sufficiently local (or you might want to go to Scotland
of course - who wouldn't it's gorgeous!) and that have suitable courses and use the
search function to see what others have to say about them and to get an idea of
what people wanted from the course.

I've only visited Woodsmoke in the Lake District at this point and I'm already a
repeat customer so they get my vote! I've just come back from their Trailbreaker
course (which admittedly won't be run again until next year I think) which is a very
good introduction to some bushcraft skills.

You might also find that there's something going on locally - eg fungus forays and
whatnot. As an example Kew Garden's second site (Wakehurst Place I think) does
a one-day bushcraft course - I think it's the last Sat in September, and there are all
sorts of similar-ish things going on all over the place, including the option to meet up
with people in your area: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=19

I've only been on a Bearclaw weekend course so far, so can't comment on others. But Bearclaw's was top-notch. I had a great time, learned a ridiculous amount & re-remembered a load of stuff I'd forgotten too.
The weekend was structured, but flexible enough that when most of us asked to do a nature walk, the guys were happy to do so. Steve even showed us some snaring techniques, & how to read a rabbit run.
Highly recommended.

The wife and I went on the 3 day coures in Scotland with Survival and Safety School, and it was the most fun we've had in ages!
Nothing was rushed and everything was explained thoroughly - which was a relief as we're both fairly new to bushcraft.
I'd really reccommend the course - Alan, the instructor, is a real character and a thoroughly nice bloke.
We're now planning on going on the 7 day course at some point next year.
Feel free to PM me or the wife (user name - Nichola) if you've any questions!
