I'm off to Venezuela later this year on a herping trip. I've never quite got in with the machetes that we are issued or get locally (Martindale No 2 copies). I've got Alfredos Parang XL coming soon from the group buy and it looks like it ticks all teh boxes for me. The other one I was looking at is the new issue golok. Anyone tried it?

the handle dosnt look much fun for prolonged use

I thought that, but I'm told i is very good. Not keen on the guard either and it's 5mm thick, so I presume heavy. That's why I need to find someone who knows about goloks that has actually used it. Found a review on Youtube, but it's by a numpty who thinks it is a poor design as it isn't pointed and therefore rubbish for combat

looks more like a bolo machete and a parang than a golok... i think the taper to the point is a bit too steep and will cause it to bend easier in that area, even though its 5mm thick that thin bit still has all that thick heavy bit attached.

The Parang Blade itself works great, but as mentioned the Handle is Pretty Naff, and splits and rots quickly.I put a simple wooden handle on the one I had,and made a wooden sheath for it aswell. And after that it really was a user.

Used that on excercise. (tested in the wrong envoironment entirely) Seemed a good piece of kit, but I only had a few hours playing time with it. The handle did give me a few blisters though.I think it might have been an lucky Golok because as soon as I stopped using it I broke my collarbone!
