Hello folks,
I am reaching an exciting new chapter in my life.
In just under 2 months I am moving, with my girlfriend, to a piece of land in rural Spain. This is going to be a great opportunity to get out of the city to somewhere where we can focus on doing the things we love - working wood, growing veg, making, living simply and being surrounded by trees and beautiful countryside. We are ,moving onto the land of a group who are renovating a big old farmhouse, growing food, making their own natural medicines and cosmetics and many other things, all without electricity! (Something we are going to rectify.

So at the beginning of April we set off with a van loaded with tools, canvas, rope and some other essentials. Our plan is to live in a bender a bit away from the farmhouse. However, I have no experience of living in a canvas structure in a Mediterranean climate. My plan is to insulate it with blankets between the wood and the canvas, as I would in this country, and have it easily ventable, probably with sides that can be rolled up without too much hassle. Does this sound like a good arrangement? Also I am not certain that the piece of land has suitably materials for making a bender. There are plentiful trees on the site including Almond, Olive, Cork Oak, Pines and Sweet chestnut, but I don't know if the latter has been coppiced, and I am not sure of the suitability of the others for bender building. I have also learned that is some sort of Salix, although again I don't know whether it will be suitable or be weeping willow, or what...

So, I don't know if anyone here has any experience of the trees of Spain, or living in a similar structure in a similar climate, but I am aware that some of you have lived in benders in the past, and I am just looking for any advice that anyone might be able to offer... on bender life, Spain, or anything else you think might be relevant.

Thankyou in advance.
Pete

Pete, since you'll be taking a load of materials anyway it may be worth taking hazel poles. I spent a few months living under canvas in Portugal and would recommend a big bug net to keep out the nastier varieties like scorpions and scolopendras which seek out shade in the day and warmth at night.

It's good to hear you're going to be living the dream, best wishes.

That seems like very good advice about the beasties. Something I hadn't concidered. Perhaps attempting to keep them out of the bender itself will be a bit of a challenge, but at least bug net over our bed seems worth doing.

I had considered taking hazel poles, but I don't have any access to coppice here in the UK, and I do like the idea of making do with local materials and adapting to what is available.
Cheers for the advice

How about trying to make a yurt-varient instead? There is a simpler version called something like a chorama dhu - the main difference is that there isn't a central ring (the hardest bit to make). Instead the usual technique is to bolt together straight poles at the apex. The timbers can be wibbly and assorted and they are easy to put up. The side walls are vertical meaning it's easy to lift a bit up for a breeze. Sidewalls are usually a diamond lattice of wood - just using cords through drilled holes where the wood crosses

I've helped build a couple of them and have erected them loads of times - will try to find some plans online for you.

Here is some info:

I got the bit in italics wrong - the Chorama-dyu has a simple side composed of triangles.

build the bender out of black plastic 25mm water pipe, held with tie-wraps/cable ties. when the benders finished with the pipe will double up as your irrigation system.

From the title I was expecting a story about a booze-cruise to Spain!

Congratulations about the decision - I hope it is everything you expect, and more.

i would take a big cheap tent. at least then you will definitely have somewhere to sleep when you get here

Take a tent, privacy and all that.

Good luck with the project, you get sent to Spain, the country of sand, sea and the other, I got sent to a bloomin kibbutz

I think i would like to have the shelter sorted before i go out. Could you not stretch to a Tipi or a yurt? I know they are expensive but its going to be your home after all.

Which region are you moving to? Even in the balmy south storms can hit with little warning and they can drop an ocean on your head! So make sure your shelter is up for the punishment and have some waterproof boxes and bags with you. :)

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

We will certainly be taking a camping tent with us for while we build the bender, and there will also probably be the opportunity to live in the farmhouse during construction, so I am not worried about speed of construction.

I'm afraid I cannot nearly afford a yurt or teepee. I have dreamt of living in a bender for a long time. I love the versatility of it. For example I could easily add a hole for a flue pipe if we decide to have a wood burner, I could increase or decrease the amount of insulation between the frame and the canvas, or even add an annex. I also love the idea of a dome over my head made of a woven latticework of branches. Doesn't that sound great?

And, Twisted Firestarter, what sort of linner would you recommend? I was planning on having a heavy plastic sheet, and then if possible, a wood floor, followed by rugs. Sound good?
Thanks everyone for the advice, and keep it coming.
