Assuming the steel is en9 - which is fairly common for hammers then I would quench it at 820-840 , no need to soak it for ages although a couple of normalising cycles from the same temperature would probably help. Warm Oil is safer to quench in, although water should be fine as well , and I would temper at 200- 240. If you don't have a thermocouple for the HT then get it to non-magnetic then heat it slowly until you see a slight change in colour this should see you in the right temperature range.

cheers mate a lot of filing and sanding then sharpening and honing to-go yet but I am now hunting down more hammer heads .
I managed to grab some ash for the handle while at the moot .
From sir Dave budd .
A lot of shoe shine style sanding and a lot of whittling has been had . I also straightened up the axe blade itself It looked like it had been drinking Dave's forge water :beer::thumbup: .
I then had to re-etch some of the details.
3 hours again each side in fact .
It's nearly there so I thought I'd show where I'm at .
Still a few bumps to sand out and a clean up and sharpen of the axe itself.
Hopefully we are all off to inwood this Friday .
So she may get swing soon.

This first attempt has started something .
I've had a lot of fun making it so far . The etching and re etching was a bit of a snore . But the end result is just what I was after . I am thinking now of what to forge from today's finds

And then flogging them on to buy knife making supplies and tools .
I may also make some carving tools so I can crack on with my stump dwelling while I'm at it .
