John,

I have just used the search function, and it is pretty impressive! Just been tweaking the set up, I have to admit its growing on me. This would be a really, really useful feature for me

Its the windows defender, and constant questions every time you try and install something that is annoying! Also much of my statistical software that cost me hundreds doesn't seem to want to install!

There is a funciton in

Control Panel\System and Maintenance

It gives you a base score on your system performance, e.g you should be aiming for a score of around 4 to be running vista smoothly, give it ago I'd be interested to see what yours comes out at.

Just been looking more into that...Your base score is the lowest of the 5 things tested. My 2.6 is for the 3d gaming graphics. I have 2.9 for graphics, but the rest are all 4.6...

I too hate it when it asks your permission when you have just asked it to do that.....Lots of swearing at it happens....Have managed to turn most of that off though...:D

True that was my concern, I have XP PRO SP2 on standby. Due to the RAM issue you mentioned, would you advise soldering on with vista?

for all the tech questions on a bushcraft forum, this will be the last one I promise:)

Unless you actually have any actual problems with Vista then I'd stick with it. There is more to learn but I don't agree it's buggy - certainly not in the same league as ME. Eventually we'll all be using it - so if you're reasonably happy, stick to it.

Always available to answer tech questions btw. I have 2 years of bushcraft experience at most and 20 in IT - so guess which one I'm better able to help with.

ooo you defeatist you

Ok its not as bad as ME but its still very buggy plus the hardware specs it needs is at best gluttony and is used to increase sales in the hardware market. Its also the old case of using customers to test the O/S as opposed to hiring people to do their own testing work.

I have no idea why people need to upgrade yet at all... unless they feel they are missing a function they need.

Same as you Mace been in IT for too long and seen this too many times before, not just operating systems but MS apps also.

Resistance if futile ! ;) :D

Tell me about it! Seen the new version of Office? "Oh, we just thought we'd junk all the UI standards that everyone's been used to for the last 20 years..." If you ask me, it's all been downhill since Office '97...

Still, at least Visual Studio keeps getting better... ;)

Apologies. Curmudgeonly techie rant over. Carry on... :)

Think very carefully before going back to XP. A lot of the hardware in the machine have drivers for Vista, but not for XP. I'm having a nightmare with a laptop at the moment.

Agreed. I spoke to a IT buddy of mine this morning about going back to XP, and he said excactly the same 'you'll have a nightmare with the drivers, is it really worth it?'!

Currently undecided whether to go back, all depends if I can get my bloomin' stats software to install!

dump vista,

what you want is solaris 10 i386 /java desktop / gnome 2.0 / openoffice.

Hmm, while I agree with what you're saying (to a point) it's probably not going to be that helpful. Many folks are tied into using certain software that will only run on Microsoft products and a change to something like Solaris is going to cause bigger headaches than problems with moving/sorting images.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm not trying to defend MS , I binned the comedy software from Redmond when it was producing Windows 98 and switched to GNU/Linux. While it's not been completely pain free, the negatives are truly outweighed by the positives a thousand-fold. My comment about Solaris equally applies to GNU/Linux so it's not for all. If your computer use is standard home use then I'd recommend you have a look. After all, it is free! That's free as in beer and as in speech!

So, if I where in your shoes I'd stick with XP for now and let others finish the beta testing of Vista for Microsoft. Have a look at Linux though, you might be surprised.

Just my tuppence ha'penny.

Thanks Chris...I have considered drag and drop, but that means opening up 2 windows and restoring them both down and adjusting them into the right positions....Surely microsoft in all there wisdom arn't going backwards, are they..? Why can't a simple task like moving a photo be done in one window... to rant.....

Sorry to go back on topic :D

Does the old trick of "drag to the task bar and hold over the folder till it opens" not work?

If that doesn't make sense let me know and i'll try and describe it better.

It proberbly would TF. That would work (for me) only if I can rename the photo's in the window opened up with the memory card going in. Then I could drag it across to the pictures window and into the right folder. If I couldn't name them first, I would have to go through all the folders, find the photo and then rename it.....Loads of hassle as I have many folders...Will look into that though, cheers......
Vista has not made it easy for photographers. XP was great for photo's...
Microsoft....Your meant to go forwards not backwards....

OK, I know it's been a long time since I used Windows, but does it no longer have Explorer to manipulate your files. Not to be confused with Internet Explorer, Explorer used to be how I did the sort of thing you're describing. Drag'n drop and renaming was definately available with this. I used to start it with alt+e but you should find it though the menu by clicking start.

Still has explorer but has other applications on top that are used to handle various types of files - for a lot of people these'll just get in the way. It's all kind of like windows media player handles music files.

I actually prefer the photo gallery for organising my files - allows a whole load of ways to search and filter that explorer just doesn't do
