That design must be close to 50 years old, I had one almost like that. Might still be somewhere. It was not bad but the shoulder straps should be the first to be modified, the belt next.

It looks like the frame and straps will weigh a ton before you put anything in it. Hell of a pack though.

It would be consequent to replace the bag with good old NATO ammunition containers made from steel.

That wouldn't be ultralight but pretty bomb proof...

The pack turned up today and it seems to be unissued. A few rust spots on some of the buckles but all the leather is in great condition. With the bag removed the frame and harness are pretty light. Now to work out the best way to attach the Italian mountain pack to it.
