An interesting pack

I was perusing my favourite web store and they've just added this https://www.varusteleka.com/en/product/finnish-external-frame-rucksack-green-surplus/63316 . The pack itself looks a bit ugly but I'm thinking the frame and leather harness are ripe for modding. I'm thinking an Italian mountain rucksack with space below might work. Anyhow, I've ordered a grade 1 one.

That design must be close to 50 years old, I had one almost like that. Might still be somewhere. It was not bad but the shoulder straps should be the first to be modified, the belt next.

It looks like the frame and straps will weigh a ton before you put anything in it. Hell of a pack though.

It would be consequent to replace the bag with good old NATO ammunition containers made from steel.

That wouldn't be ultralight but pretty bomb proof...

3.5 kilos empty, which is not bad for a 100l system! The only thing I would replace are the shoulder and hip straps though.
Super price!

The pack turned up today and it seems to be unissued. A few rust spots on some of the buckles but all the leather is in great condition. With the bag removed the frame and harness are pretty light. Now to work out the best way to attach the Italian mountain pack to it.
