A (partially) missed opportunity

Drove to the tip today to drop off some garden waste. I always have a bit of a poke round to see what things other people have thrown away. Got 2 brand new lengths of tongue and groove (sadly the wrong size to fix my shed, it turns out). Was in a bit of a rush so didn't ask for all the other untreated wood (I've got a woodburner at home) and the large candle (that I could have melted down to make fuel with)

Cut and split the T&G into fine kindling for the KK

? So you're allowed to take stuff from the tip?

The job's worths at my local tip said I couldn't take anything away because it would breach the terms of the site licence. I only wanted the inside of an automatic washing machine to use for a fire

They're not allowed to give anything from the electrical bin (or the metal bin, I think) but anything else you can just ask - I suppose it's extending the definition of recycling centre

All the council tips I've been to have big signs saying that you are not allowed to take anything once the person throwing it away has put it down as it is then the councils property. I have approached people to ask if I can have something before they chuck it on the pile though. And I did once get the jobs worth at the tip to sell me a 5'x4' alloy camping trailer that had been dumped. All it needed was new hubs (which I got cheap from Towsure) and it was good as new.

Our tip is really easy going. We have taken things out of skips in front of them! In fact one worker helped me get an old Ammo box out of the metal skip.
