The lower North Island and upper South Island in NZ had a pretty big quake of 6.5 yesterday just after 17.00 local time. I was swaying on my feet and my wife, who was upstairs was shaken about quite a bit ..... And we are a couple of hours away from Wellington where there was a fair bit of "light damage."

It got us thinking about being that much more prepared. I mean we have food, water set aside, tarps, firewood, gas BBQ etc etc but throughout the house and garage. Thinking of centralising stuff maybe, and also having a get home kit in the car. Hmmm. Decided we need more in the way of torches or lanterns, or perhaps one of those hand crank lamp radios? Probably the most important thing would be a plan.

Anyone serious about this stuff?

Glad you're Ok. And yes, a plan is the first priority. Check with the local Red Cross and government agencies to see what they recommend.

I'd add any prescription meds (and a copy of the scrips) plus spare eyeglasses (if applicable) and copies of all important documents (deeds, insurance, etc.) to an evacuation bag just in case you need to go to a shelter.

And don't forget to plan and provide for your pets as well.

Re: wind up radios to be honest they are not all they're cranked up to be. You can buy small radio's that will run for ages on a couple of AA batteries. Look out for Tecsun, Eton/Grundig radios which are generally pretty good and won't bust the bank.

The bayliss radios aren't half bad.

I'd say your grab bag should have a basic mobile in it - charge battery now and then.

Some anti inflammatories, water purification tablets, hand sanitizer, loo roll and suchlike. If a big quake hits, it's hygiene that is an issue in the weeks that follow.
