I have the possibility of getting hold of a skookum bush tool in 3V steel. Anyone have any experience of it? Rod's website states that it is more difficult to sharpen with stones than his other steels. If this is the case what would be used instead of water stones?

For information, i would say that I am now at a level where I can sharpen my FGYT/ Duncan knife in 01 steel to a good standard using a DC4 and stropping. My concern is whether I would struggle with the 3V?

Cheers,
Steve.

G'day Steve

I don't own a Skookum so I can't comment directly on the knife.

I do own 2 other knives in 3V, so I can offer some comment on the steel.

It is a very tough steel with excellent edge holding :35:

If you are accoustomed to maintaining the edge on your knife with regular maintance, then a hone with high grit wet/dry abrasive and a strop will keep the edge shaving sharp with minimal effort.

If your intending to test the edge holding and use it past the stage where it has a "working edge", you'll need some time with a hone to restore the edge. The ceramic on your DC 4 would be quicker than the wet/dry on a hone. You can then finish off with a strop.

Kind regards
Mick
