    Prefered fire lighting method

I generally go for firesteel onto birchbark - accessible enough to be possible for a relative noob like me, but feels "proper" somehow. Also the firesteel isn't prone to water problems if I take a canoeing tumble :-) Ben

North West meet Delamere, 20-22 April

Thanks to Goose for organising this and to all who contributed. We had a very enjoyable day. Surprising fact of the day - my three year old thought Sorrel was fantastic, and couldn't get enough of it! Thanks everyone. Ben

    Dehydrator - "Urban Bushcraft"

Hi Y'all, I'm sure you've all seen the cardboard box dehydrator (if not, try http://www.alpharubicon.com/prepinfo/dehydratorstryder.htm). Well, I had an old Ikea bookcase that was destined for the tip as it had collapsed a bit, so I thought I'd have a go at making something equally cheap but...

North West meet Delamere, 20-22 April

I think you forgot me :( Happybunny + Wife + 3yr old + 6 week old coming for day visit on Saturday. (Or maybe your list was only overnighters.) We are all really looking forward to it (well, maybe the baby doesn't care too much). Can't wait to meet and learn. Hope you'll forgive us for...

North West meet Delamere, 20-22 April

Wow. Looking better and better - I can't wait. With a lake about I'd normally bring my (proper) inflatable open canoe, but I may not bother as it is just a day trip, and we'll already have all the baby stuff (unless anyone is thinking of getting one and so wants a look - they are obscure...

    getting started

Time. Oh, where does it all go... I'm a beginner too, so this is an interesting thread. I've small children, share running a business and have committments at our church, and so there is never enough time. But enough excuses - I'm hoping for some good weather this weekend and the chance to go...

North West meet Delamere, 20-22 April

Hi, We have a very little baby just now (only 9 days old as I write) so I don't think we are up for staying the night just yet, but if no-one minds we would love to come for the day on Saturday (that would be me, my Mrs., our 3 year old girl and the baby.) We've done lots of camping but...

Little game hunt with camera challenge

Awesome! Really laugh out loud! I think you might have noticed if I did it with my daughter's rabbit as it is funny coloured and lop eared... Ben PS - there is some claim that it is the daughter's rabbit in public, but really it belongs to my wife.

    Innovation in Bushcraft

That is a really interesting thought. I'm always saying that developments in materials science have made a huge difference to so many sports - outdoor / wilderness ones as much as any others, and you have given so many examples re: bushcraft. In other pursuits things have become accessible to...

What do you carry in your Firstaid kit

Hi, I carry a small 1st aid kit, and I've recently added to it a pair of tick hooks, having had a group of friends all get them (ticks, obviously, not hooks) on a Scottish wilderness canoe trip, and not found them easy to deal with. There was a group buy on them at songofthepaddle...

    Kelly kettle

...or rather hot, as that is the idea. I'll keep my eye open for suitable vessels - at least until I can afford a Kelly Kettle. Thank you :) Ben

    Hide

I have an aquaintance who runs a leather furniture factory, and I'm wondering if it is worth asking him if he has scraps that I could do anything with. Can anyone give any pointers to good introductory resources on leatherworking? Is furniture leather likely to be any use for anything...

    Lidl folding saw

Personally I think the Aldi one is a lot better - see my comments at http://www.bushcraftuk.com/community/showthread.php?p=265466#post265466 (Look at it this way - if Aldi's had been out before the Lidl I wouldn't have bought the Lidl as well, but as Lidl's was out 1st, I now have both. One...

    Japanese hand saw - Lidl

Aldi had some folding saws at the same price in last Sunday, and they are much better than the Lidl ones. They have a solid body that won't get full of sawdust and crud, the blades lock properly closed (not just nearly closed so that they can snag on clothes etc, they give you a choice of fine...

    Kelly kettle

OK, Kelly Kettles I know, but forgive my ignorance, what is a "hobo stove"? I sounds cheap (and therefore good :) ) Ben

    Canoe Trip

Hi, I just want to re-inforce a couple of ideas from above, really. First, I can't recommend highly enought the SCA book "Scottish Canoe Touring" -...

    Newbie saying Hello

Hello. There, I've said it. If you want to know something about me, I'm a thirty something IT guy with a 3 year old girl and a one week old boy. I've been going camping regularly since I was less than a year old. I did quite a bit of climbing and walking with my parents in my teens, then...

    Children's Bushcraft

Hi, I'm new here (I'll post in the newbies :newbie: thread in a minute unless I get called away) but I have recently discovered a way to generate lots of interest in going for a walk in my 3 year old - Geocaching. I know this isn't a bushcraft skill as such, but it is about being...
