Clothing that works in sustained Wet conditions

Hello from across the pond. I know a lot of outdoors people in the UK have experience with periods of damp and rainy conditions. What clothing material and combination works best in sustained wet conditions where you don't have an opportunity to dry your clothing? IMHO, wool works OK in a...

Buffalo Special 6 Vs. Fleece & Windshirt combinations

Hi Guys! I've become interested in the Buffalo Special 6, or Pile/Pertex cobination after reading some great reviews about how fast they dry if they become wet. However, i'm on the otherside of the pond and they seem really hard to get over here. It also seems that it has become a bit dated...

Question about British Smock Sizes (from the USA)

I'm looking to buy a British Desert or MTP smock and need help with sizing. I'm about 6 feet tall, 180 pounds (82 kg) and a 44 inch chest. Ideally, I would like enough room for a thick wool sweater. Can any one help me out with what British size I should go for? I'm thinking 190/104, but I've...

Is G-1000 Fabric any better than the 5.11 TDU or Taclite material?

Obviously the G-1000 has wax, but they both seem to made of a similar mix of poly-cotton. I was wondering if anyone here has owned both and could make list pros and cons of each.

    100% Cotton Jackets ?

Aside from the 100% cotton British smocks, does anyone wear (Gasp!!!) 100% cotton jackets? I realize most people and books say this is a no-no, but I find certain types quite durable, comfortable, and obviously better around fires. If you do wear one, what kind is it?

British DPM Smock Vs US M65 jacket

It seems the US M65 is a popular jacket on this board. However, the British Smock seems to create more interest on US messageboards. I guess it's because of the rarity of each depending on the country where you live. Does anyone here own and have woods experience with each? Which one is your...

Swedish M90 Parka vs U.S. Fishtail Parka

Can anyone who has owned one of these make a comparison between the two. I think both are designed to be worn over all your layers. Is one tougher and warmer than the other?

    Dachstein Wool sweaters and mittens

Anyone know a good source for the boiled wool sweaters and mittens from Dachstein? I know the Austrian army used to make boiled wool pullovers but I can't find any sources. I guess these were about the warmest sweaters ever made.

Soft Shells: Do they have a place in Bushcraft?

Anyone here have one of the newer "Soft Shells"? Usually they are made of synthetics and I know most people here are traditionalists and try to avoid synthetics when they can. However, I know a lot of you like the nylon/goretex shells. Just wondering if any of you own a soft shell and can offer...

    Cold Weather Mittens

Can anyone here recommend some good cold weather mitts. I'm having trouble finding a good leather overmitt and a quality wool liner. I'd love to get some Dachstein mittens, but they're hard to get in the U.S. Plus I can't find any good leather mitts either. The only overshells you can find now...

    Boiled Wool Products

Anyone know where one can get boiled wool products from mittens to sweaters? I've seen the Austrian surplus wool surplus that look incredibly warm, but I haven't seen much else. I'd like to get anything boiled or felted like jackets, sweaters, and hats.

    100% Wool Vs 85%Wool/15%Nylon?

I was looking at getting some heavy wool pants and jacket and have an option between 100% wool and 85%wool/15%nylon. The 85% wool blend is obviously cheaper to make and does add to the durability of the product. But I was wondering if any of you think the extra 15% of wool really makes a...

What are your favorite trousers made of?

I'm trying to get some good trail pants but I don't know what material to get. There's the NYCO (Nylon/Cotton) blends, Poly/Cotton blends, 100% Nylon, or 100% cotton. What are your favorite trousers made of and what the advantages/disadvantages of these materials. I'd like to get some tough and...

    Non-Military Smocks

Know any companies that make jackets similar to the cuts of British SAS smocks? I'm looking for alternatives and I would prefer a NYCO or Gabardine blend material.

    Gabardine Vs. Ventile

With all the talk of Ventile in my other thread I was wondering if there is a huge difference between Gabardine and Ventile. I don't any clothes of either clothe, but I have looked at Ventile smocks and they are way out of my price range. I was wondering if any of you have owned any gabardine...

    Ray Mears' Winter Layering System

I've seen a few of his shows where he is in Arctic Sweden and Canada. It appears that all he wears is a green turtleneck base layer, followed by a Swanndri wool half-zip shirt-jac, a norwegian type wool sweater, and finally an uninsulated cotton anorak. He also mentioned temperatures of -30 to...

    Just out of curiosity.............

Just wondering why some British posters here advise against wearing military camo patterns out in the bush. It's quite common to see someone in the U.S. wearing some military camo out in the bush (even though no one ever wears the full matching combination - trousers + smock). It doesn't really...
