DT GCSE market research (fire tray)

EDIT: I now have a SurveyMonkey survey. Please do not complete it if you have already posted a response in this thread. You can post your response in this thread if you don't want to do the survey on SurveyMonkey. The survey is here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/6BBVLCV It's been a while...

    How to thin it?

I bought some 5mm thick stainless steel off the "Bay of E" Straight away, you can probably see my problem. It's too thick. So how should I use it for the knife I want to make, with a blade length of 8cm? I want it to have a scandi grind because people seem to say it's easier to sharpen...

    A candle holder

Here's a candle holder I carved using a set of scarily sharp chisels and gouges given to me by a very nice woodcarver called Ted Summerhayes. It's made of Leylandii, sanded, and oiled with Danish oil.

    Tarping in Wales???

I'll be camping by the sea in Pembrokeshire with my Explorer group in August. We have to make our own sleeping arrangements. I have three options: A tall, very old tent (with a single "arch pole" setup) An old tent with a much lower profile but two broken poles My DD 3x3m tarp If...

    Something VERY off-topic

Is it just me, or is the beginning of summer the time when we start to make more stuff, and kids start having water fights? I thought I'd combine those two things, so I made this: It fires 30 feet!:yikes: And it was mostly spare parts, so no money wasted! Here's a video...

    Rhododendron

i hope I've spelt that right! Is there anything you can do with rhododendron other than watch the leaves burning?

    Tenth Wonder

I love some of the Tenth Wonder marketing! Have a look at this: http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww338/dumbasscat/newultmeas.jpg Or this: "Some of them have a print on the side that was intended for our zip up hammocks. Just ignore it, it says it has a zip - it doesn't." Brilliant...

    Vermont

Just got back from being stuck in America! 60 of us (from my school) were skiing in Vermont and had to stay there for an extra week... I must say, the woods there are very nice. I got a couple of rolls of birch bark that were bigger than any I've got from trees in England. All in all, it...

    SAK sharpening?

I've found that the microbevel on an SAK is way too small to sharpen easily, and the blade's flat ground and very thin, so it would be hard to re-grind. Any tips for sharpening it?

    Hoover filters

Would the filter from a vacuum cleaner be any good as a water filter? Obviously you'd have to boil the water afterwards, or add some other filtration technique. What do you think? Fred

    Spoon knives

How do you use a spoon knife? Do you push it away from you or pull it towards you? Just wondering

    Flint and steel?

Are there and common household/workshop items made from carbon steel? It's just that I'd like to see what using a flint and steel's like, using my own kit. I've just bought a ferro rod, but it seems that if you're able to use a flint and steel, you're in a different league!

    Underquilt

Can anyone recommend a ridiculously cheap underquilt that'll work as well or better than a sleeping bag in my hammock?:hammock: I noticed how cold it was when I slept in my sleeping bag in my hammock in Dorset :vio:, and I now have a craving to buy an underquilt! I've only got £30 though...

Tenth Wonder compact + Super Tough 3.2x1.45m tarp

Well, the hammock and tarp I ordered from Tenth Wonder arrived on Thursday. They were the TW Super Tough 3.2x1.45m tarp and the TW Camo Compact hammock. I wasn't impressed with the bad grammar on the hammock - it had writing and diagrams all over it, and the one that sticks in my head is "This...

    Bow Drill

I need to demonstrate the bow drill to my scout group. So far all I've managed to get from a bow drill is a loud, high pitched squeaking sound and a tiny bit of smoke. No sign of the blackened "wood dust" though. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? I'm using soft wood for the hearthboard and...

    Cheap Hammocking

I've got forty quid left over from Christmas... I want to get some kit for hammocking I've seen a lot of recommendations for DD hammocks because of their cheapness and relatively good quality. So should I buy a camping hammock, cheap tarp and some paracord or should I save up for some better...

    Lucky

I was on a bus today when some people discovered a 24h ration pack and started throwing it around. I picked a few water purifying tablets (Aquatabs) and some "Beverage whitener" from the floor. What is Beverage whitener and does anyone have any suggestions for things I could put in my...

    Caterpiller

    Scouts

Anyone know any bushcraft that would keep a scout pack entertained for a few hours? Apart from the obvious ones like firelighting and shelters.
