I used to drive an average of 750,000 miles per year on motor ways(yes seven hundred and fifty thousand miles per year, thats three quarters of a million) and the middle lane drivers were my biggest headache.

750,000 miles per year. Hmmm?

The A1 is a funny one sometimes, you'll get two wagons overtaking each other about a mile up ahead, one doing 56mph the other doing 55mph. Everyone dives into the outside lane to join the back of the queue and leaves lane one empty. It's illegal and dangerous but sticking in the inside lane undertaking the queue with the wagons is a steadier drive with less braking and accelerating.

There used to be an arcade classic in the 80's called Spyhunter, I sometimes wish I had that car

Out of interest ,how many people reading this thread have actually been taught how to drive on a motorway?
It's part of the HGV and PSV test, but not for car tests.

Many of our major roads are only two lanes....two lorries crawling up a hill and one *tries* to overtake the other and successfully seizes the whole damned road down to 45 instead of 70.....no wonder there are accidents.
Lots of our roads have "Allow Overtaking" signs, the problem is that not every benighted idiot is capable of overtaking

Actually, it's an offence not to allow someone to pass on many of our roads; the Sheriffs take a very dim view of it if it comes up before them :D

German bloody tourists :( :( and egotistical men.
It's not shameful to be overtaken, even if it is by a woman
If there's a passing place and I know I'm not going fast enough for those behind me, I'll pull in; why the hang can't they ?

Unofficially I had some training off my old man who's ex traffic police, didn't stop me writing off my mini before I was 17 though :)

Me; I took the lessons after I passed my test. Kind of thought it a good idea since I was averaging 1,000 miles a week on them some months.

cheers,

Driving on the motorway is no different from any other road, the rules are just the same, and it,s simple KEEP TO THE LEFT except when overtaking

Middle lane drivers on the motorway bug me but not as much as two lorries on the dual caridgeway, both limited to 56mph, taking about five miles to overtake each other!

As frustrating as middle lane hogs are, please don't be tempted to pass on the inside, this is possibly the most dangerous thing you can ever do on a motorway.

I would be happy to see (or not see!) all Police traffic cars unmarked, this, combined with a month long campaign of zero tolerance to moving traffic offenses, would remove a good few drivers from our overcrowded roads.

I spend most of my time in the fast lane, as I drive a fast BM & like to get places quick. When you drive in the fast lane a lot you get to see all the idiots at play in a way you dont if you are in the slow lane most of the time, move out to overtake & then go back in. I am not trying to be smug, it's just something I have noticed. The worst ones are the people that drive right up behind something, flash once & then pull out, half looking at their mirror as they go.

I must admit however that a completely empty motorway, in the middle lane at dawn, in a decent fast car is just the best. A bit of decent bit of classic rock with the Radar alerts wired into the hifi. Bliss.

What is the difference in speed between the fast lane and the slow lane then?
