If you ever wanted a Kifaru pack

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August) available until March 31st, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
I never could see why the Kifaru packs (and other items) were so expensive. There are way too many other quality packs out there that cost much less. Seems there is always someone that will pay the high price and perpetuate the myths about the greatness of some product. Apple comes to mind!

Kifaru are hand made, is a handmade suit really the same as one from next?

SB is there any UK representation for warranty issues here in the UK? You make a valid point, (and I am interested in some of their other gear, and I know lots of the guys here have Kifaru gear) but I wouldn't spend even £50 on a sack if I had to return it to USA if anything went t*ts up with it.

Cheers

Kif's are used by Forces all over the world. It's kit built to last you a lifetime (or more). I've got an G1 Zulu and it's solid. Though to be honest, a bit overkill (and heavy) for bushcrafters. I'm lurking the Kifaru forums for some time now, and can't remember any talk about kit not being solid enough. Warranty is for life, even if you mod your kit yourself. There's a thread somewhere out there with that being confirmed by the owner Patrick Smith. It's also said they're known about their quality customer service.

I kept looking at it, as I was in the market for a large pack.

I kept saying to myself 'It is a lot of money but it is a Kifaru, plus it has the extra lid thrown in'

I kept resisting but he kept putting the price down... This morning I cracked & picked it up fo £230.

It's a lot for a big pack but also it's a good deal for a Kif, and it comes with the XTL lid & a few other bits. Can't wait as it turns out next week. If ever there was a pack for a BOB, this could be it for me.

It is great kit but seriously over engineered and as a result very heavy for everyday use. A bit OTT for most of us. Which is not to say that is not an absolutely cracking deal - it is - I'd have snapped it up if I'd seen it sooner at that price! Well done!

You got a serious bargain its a pack your kids kids will be wearing. I have a LongHunter and a Zulu, which I'd just bought when he re posted it, other wise I might well have bought it myself. There will always be the usual sados who tell you their pack is as good for only X% of the price - funnily enough none of them have ever owned anything handmade. Custom Knives are nice and it's true a Mora will do what they do, but your pack, bag, jacket and boots are the difference that makes the difference. The Pack Frame you've got will let you either carry other loads (a dead Elk is traditional) or bags or a waterproof drum.

Now you've got all the fun of setting it up to fit - which I didn't find that easy - after several tinkerings it suddenly works and then you'll see what all the fuss is about. The amount of money I've spent on back work over the years is something I'd rather not go through again. Buy the best and only cry once. If you decide you dont like it stick it back up for sale you'll get your money back.

Thanks guys. I know they are heavy but that is what makes them bomb proof. I am going on a trip later this year where I will need a big rucksack again & this will work out very well. Plus it is a Kif & a big one at that, which is enough to make you smile at that price. Although it's a lot of money & I could have got a began for a quarter of that, I decided you only live once, I can afford it & most importantly I know it will make me smile every time I use it.

I will have a look into how you adjust them, download the owners manual etc.. There is a good chance that the guy thaowned it before is around 6', so I am hopeing it wont need too much adjustment. Last time I was in an Ellis Brigham(?) shop they had a back measurement device, so I will get that done next time I am up in the smoke.

I like the idea that you can take the pack off & use the frame in a number of ways. The CargoChair looks like a good peiece of kit, which allows you to add a strong lifting platform to the frame. I am also intrigued by the ways you can add different pouches to the frame to make all sorts of interesting loads:

I have a feeling buying Kif pouches may start to get expensive... ;0)

If you ever want to know what the difference between Kifs and other packs is, check the stitching, the quality of the fittings, the wear-resistance of the materials and the design features. I have a G2 Zulu with E&E: they will last longer than I do. I wouldn't use it for climbing trips or long-distance walks but if I know a bag is likely to get abused, it's what I reach for. I had a G1 for ops which I sold on to a mate when I retired - the quality of the pack meant we could just bung batteries, radios, antennas, mags and ammo straight in and not worry about it splitting the pack material or pulling the straps off. It was worn, carried, dragged, chucked on and off helicopters and AT. It took a round and it got scorched. Still worked.

Yup, they're expensive but you get what you pay for and that's why Kifaru do very well. As stated above, it could be considered overkill but so is a Porsche or a Ferrari - you would buy them as they are performance cars that have a specific use and reputation. If you don't care, buy a family saloon. (I should point out here that I have neither a Porsche nor a Ferrari! But, if I did, it would be olive green ;))

Heavy but robust. If you want robust - buy Kifaru. If you want lightweight - buy Golite or the like. There are compromises .... but that's exactly what they are.

Thanks for the advice guys. Lots to think about here and I will do some reasearch as I am liking the idea of being able to use the frame/straps and then be able to load it up in different ways. I can use the big bag when off on long trips or extended stays out, while I could make up a nice medium sized rig out of a number of pods/bags. I will look at modifying a Mystery Ranch Load Sling but kind of like the idea of a Kif CargoChair, as I could use it as a chair when out and about.

I missed a couple of Kifaru pods that were also up on BB, so will be keeping an eye out for any that come on the market.
