Recently I trashed the masks on my GB working axe. Those silly soft riveted masks just don't stand up to day after day abuse. Trouble is of course, that sending a 3 foot long double bit working axe through the post is fairly impractical! So I sent just one of the two trashed masks.

Dougster took them, made two "mirror image masks" (better than the original which are identical and so one popper is always on the "wrong" side) withproper, thick, stitched welted leather

A perfect fit, better than the original in terms of design, quality of make and robustness and will protect my "big arsed chopping axe" from careless fingers.

Four cords will be addressed by this puppy now!

If you want a bit of challenging leather, you can ask Rich with confidence.

Nice masks!

Nice work :)

Do you find that standing the axe on the new masks turns the corners over? I've almost put the corner through one of mine already :(

I was always told to lay the axe flat or stand upright with the head top most to avoid this.

That said the new sheaths look to be of much heavier grade leather than the ones GB supply.

The GB is prone to damage on the toes of the bit as they extend above the eye quite alot, not good to get in the bit of sticking these on/in the ground particularly without a sheath.

I don't ever rest the head on the ground without the masks on  The only place it gets put down unmasked is with both the points stuck into a log or chopping block, with the helve standing vertically.
Dougster's masks do look a lot thicker than the originals - I was sketching out a one-piece design with a (wooden?) cross bar covering the points - sort of leather furniture over a wooden frame, so the mask stays together and protects the points, with the wooden bar taking the weight on the top of the eye, rather than the points. It will probably end up looking more like a case than the more normal pair of edge-covers - I'll post some pics when I've got something that works :)

I know well the quality of dougster! Have had a kydex sheath system and an axe mask, and am awaitig the delivery of a bushy a sheath!

Top quality stuff that is!
