Oh dear, just to say I've nothing against the guys who put vids up on YT, in fact a very good freind of mine is on there chopping a tree down no less....what he was thinking at the time I don't know because he used Vickers machine gun to do it, here it is.........enjoy :lmao:

There are also many "So called" experts who critique other's work, yet, other than their own self opinions, have no evidence to prove their self proclaimed skills..............legends in their own lunchbox as it were. At least those making a video are giving something back.

So it's only OK to comment and join the debate if you make youtube vids? Surely we are making these things for viewers and those viewers have valid viewpoints that should be listened to.

Here are some made by Nicola about my work. We don't make instructional vids but hope to make inspirational ones.

when most People make a nonprofit Video on youtube, They are not only doing it for fun, they are doing it to help and entertain others and contribute somthing.

it Realy Pisses me off when other people for no reason start to critisise that person and their videos when they dont even do it themselves. its horrible when you have put a large ammount of effort into somthing to entertain people when these "archair bushcrafters" and "keyboard Commandos" will do nothing but nit pick and critisise the video you have provided them.

if you dont like it, dont watch it.

if people are good enough to critisise others work then they should show some evidence of things they have done themselves.

YT has some good stuff and a lot of average stuff Bushcraft wise...

I think Robin has made a sensible point. Surely when you post up a video to YT that very act is inviting comment and review of what's been put up from it's potential audience ... A bit like a Hollywood movie people only ever comment on the finished article not on the effort or time taken to make the movie... I dont see posting to YT as some sort of philanthropic act for the most part more a case of making a video for a bit of fun and sticking it up...

Viewing this on my phone, so can't see the YT links at the moment.

I've seen a fair few vids on YT, some great, some truly awful. Some of the ones showing knot tying have been very useful.

I disagree with the notion that you have to be better at something in order to criticise something. Don't people criticise sportsmen etc?

Finally a course with Ged, is how I found my way onto this website a good few years ago. I can vouch for the fact that he knows his stuff, and that he's got a face for radio! :D

I've got one of them on one of my videos telling me that when sharpening a convex edge knife you must not drag the blade or have anything like a mousepad or foam under you sandpaper and that you must only turn the knife blade on its spine when stroping and then telling me that he doesn't want to argue because he's afraid he'll embarrass me...oh did I forget to mention he says that he has been making knives for 30 years!

I have no problem with constructive criticism or any sort of gripe as long as it is correct even if the user has no "proof" that they know what they are talking about. It's the armchair heros that are the worst!

As has been said, You Tube is an innovation to Bushcraft !!

Lots of experts out there in the Cyber Wilderness now promoting their prowess and goods, "I can do this, do that, sell you this"......is it educational or is it a stage for the snake-oil sellers, whats yours thoughts guys?

Thanks for reading

Thanks for all the feedback guys

Varied opinions as expected and welcomed and that was the reason for my post in the first place.

As using this forum, doing emails, etc, is the boundaries of my IT skills I can safely say you won't be seeing my ugly mug on You Tube.

So, educational, everyone (even me) seems to think so to a degree, if the correct techniques are being displayed.

Recreational, it's obvious some guys enjoy doing it, so surely thats a good thing, good clean fun.

Snake-Oil sellers, probably some out there, However, I can see the benefits of plugging your business in this manner but I also beleive it might come back and bite you in the butt.

Personally, it's not for me, I'd rather shove wasps up my butt than watch YT for more than 2 minutes, I would lose the will to live, I prefer getting out and having a go.

One final thought is, I bet the guys that get a bit radgy at peoples comments about their vids are first to have a dig at Bear Grylls, etc, seems to be a one way street, the criticism thing - I beleive it opens the door for improvement.

Thankyou everyone for all your input

I think it's a little unfair to shoot down Youtube users for using Youtube in EXACTLY the way it was intended. Besides there are plenty of 'Instructors' out there who are fairly incompetent (I've met several).

Ashley and I do not make any money from our Youtube contributions, we're not in it for profit of fame, we simply believe in making bushcraft knowledge available to everyone and Youtube is an excellent way of doing just that. I have instructed for several schools, and like to think I am at least competent. However, we both research our content when in doubt to ensure, where humanly possible, that we are passing on accurate information.

Not everyone can afford to spend a couple of hundred pounds on a course. They could of course read a book, but it seems to me that to be shown something visually is much more efficient, besides who's to say the book is any more correct than the video? At least people can post an opinion on Youtube if you're touting rubbish.

I fail to see how having an opinion on YouTube differs in any way (other than visually), to having an opinion on here. We have to trawl through just as much 'irrelevant' content on this forum to get to what we are interested in.

Don't confuse Youtube with a professional film studio, it is what it is and we can all learn something from it if we make the effort. I think it is a wonderful resource, and if you don't take advantage of its wealth of information, then you are missing out.

Feel free to check out our Youtube channel ;)
