I went into Paris yesterday afternoon and on the way back stopped off in town and picked up some more cans. Among them, two differently prepared cans of cuttlefish.

On the left, pieces of squid (Illex coindetii) in spicy American sauce (sunflower oil, tomato, onion, chilli pepper, spices), €3.55. Best before: 1 June 2029.

On the right, stuffed squid (Loligo vulgaris) in olive oil, €8.50. :O Best before: 26 November 2030.

I tried the expensive one on the right first... I'm not impressed. Bland, very slightly fishy, six small squid in lots of oil with three very thin slivers of green pepper. Even the oil doesn't have the flavour of good olive oil.

The other is better, in my opinion, but as pieces in sauce it's not different enough from mackerel... Nice texture, no fishiness and a rich, thick sauce.

Uh oh, Mackerel are on the endangered list due to overfishing. Waitrose have stopped selling. The rest of the shops will probably follow suit in fear of public perception pressure (another word for news media stories).

Not that I'm knocking it this time, the row about commercial interests vs environmental /overfishing data has been going on for a long time now. Irrespective of fish type, the problem is simply human population consumption exceeds natural global regrowth capability.
Freshwater fish farming, e.g. Tilapia, Carp has potential. Not a fan of seawater farms, too many bigger picture environmental risks to the natural world.

Tinned mackerel will continue to be sold "while stocks last" - better buy in your stock now.

I can't seem to find this anywhere, do you happen to have a link?

So alot of us seem to be fans of tinned fish. For whatever reason.

Do many of us use fresh fish? and if not - why not? Is it considerations to how to cook it properly?

I know I shy away from fresh fish for that very reason.

Sorry wrong terminology. Not good but recoverable if Govt's and Commercial will give way. I understand Cod stocks have improved a bit but still on the watch list.

Price might put some folk off, and doing the prep.

I don't have a problem with cooking fresh fish, it's just the faff gutting/filleting/deboning etc prep. I do it but not nearly as often as I should. e..g I've got half dozen whole small mackerel in the freezer, been there a while, but today bought smoked kippers and precooked seafood mix.
I've also got a freezer bag of emperor fish steaks which need no prep and thaw quickly, so get eaten soonest.

I like fresh fish but cook it incredibly rarely, perhaps once or twice per year. Though I’d love to do more. Reasons are:

- A disappointing lack of properly fresh fish options in shops around here
- It is annoying dealing with fish bones, especially after a day of work and you just want to sit and enjoy dinner
- I really don’t like salmon fillets/steaks, and that seems to be the fresh fish with the best range of quality/ethics options in the supermarkets. Love smoked salmon though
- Lingering smell from cooking it that my wife wouldn’t really enjoy

Have we skipped over rollmops? I know they are more a jar thing than a tinned thing like, but still, rollmops! Lovely.

... aparently an excellent source of creatine (poor things :))

Not a fan. I do enjoy sweet cure Herring... Bit sticky at times, but i prefer the flavour.

I used to like eels, preferably stir fried rather than jellied, used to be able to buy them live in Chinatown straight out of the tank. Or from the eel pie and mash shop.
Sadly eels are also on the watch list, and so are the pie and mash shops.

Aye, the elver runs in the broads and such are well protected now. Used to be a staple... now, they're more a luxury. Rightly so too, if the numbers have declined that much.

So i was randomly browsing for a bulkish bag of Star Anise (Why pay over a quid for 6 petals when you can pay £2 for 10 times as many) and came across this absolute gem of a website. And they have a tinned section full of fish amongst other stuff. The whole website looks like a treasure trove, have very good reviews on trustpilot. and not expensive at all. Gonna be trying a few things from here i dare say.

Tested this recipe last night and it was a household winner. Simple working class food and all the better for it. I would get plain oil rather than the flavoured stuff I had and I would add an extra clove and a wee bit more tomato paste...oh, and make sure it's good pasta, life is too short for cheap pasta.
