Look up the long dark then!

I’ll stand by it being the best survival game ever. It’s incredibly intricate, for example you can make tools and equipment to catch and process a fish and then cook it on a fire (once you’ve collected materials) and render the oil for use in a lantern when it’s dark.
I have heard good things to be honest and I believe the sequel is even more refined.
I will see if its come down in price.

I'm probably being somewhat nitpicky but DayZ has the random additional threat and concern of other players - which adds to the induced paranoia and avoidance or areas or planning a route out through less contested areas.

I will check out the Long Dark however.

The Long Dark is a good game but the story mode is rubbish. Sandbox mode is where the fun is.

I agree story mode is a little tedious, and quite ridiculous at times. I stick play to see where they take it but I got very bored with the last instalment. Wintermute is a lot more fun.

@TeeDee there is still threat from preadators out there and you can increase/decrease the threat level too.

Just boughtt that on sale. £7. Not played it yet but i intend to. Also got Witcher 3 for £2.49, so might be a while yet. Sons of the Forest is very much a 'Long Dark' type of game, but more modern and i'm well into that atm. Check it out. Its kinda an 'edge of your seat' sort of game

My favourite exploration/survival game has to be Subnautica. It's primarily based on underwater exploration on an alien planet, and it's both majestic and terrifying. Utterly brilliant game. Available on PC and consoles. Just played through it again this past few weeks actually.

SubNautica was ace (still is i guess) Played the first one quite a bit, never really got into the 2nd one. Just seemed a bit copy paste after the first, but with Ice.

If majestic and terrifying is your thing, check out Sons of the the forest. Not joking. Crafting, building, tension, suspense... frightening... Yes to all of those.

Yeah, there are a few of us around. I mostly play in the evenings after work lately it’s been single-player stuff like Cyberpunk and Horizon because it’s easier to jump in and out without scheduling with friends. Online games are fun, but I burned out on competitive shooters after too many late-night matches. If you’re trying to get back into gaming, I’d say start with something story-driven or co-op so it doesn’t feel like a grind. Also, if you swap between platforms, keeping track of good deals helps a lot since prices jump around.

I quit competitive gaming a couple of years ago for the reasons you point out. Since then, its been Red dead 2, and sons of the forest, and those 2 combined have taken 3000 hours of my life, which ill never get back. But they can keep em. Don't want em back. Cant do much anyway when ya cant move and breathe at the same time.

Survival mode seems where its gonna be at for me. I read reviews and check youtube before i buy stuff. Heard the same things about that plenty of times. Bought it anyway...

Epic Christmas game giveaway has been leaked. Includes RDR2:

Some decent games there.

Edit: turns out it might be fake. But they are giving away daily free games, so worth a check.

That won some best game of 2025 and some extra awards didn't it?
Apparently... I heard about it on the wireless at the weekend. OH wondered if our son might like that game as a Christmas present.

He has a PS5 slim, so without an optical disc reader... How does buying a game for another person work? Would I buy a code that he would need to enter (I suppose using an on-screen virtual keyboard)?

PS5's have internet capability. Digital games are bought through certain providers. You can pay for them with your credit/debit card through his account with those providers.. The purchase will then be given to him to use. That doesnt mean he then has free reign to use your card though, so long as you dont save the payment details on said recipient account.

I started playing Doom 2016 for the first time yesterday. It's been sitting in my Steam games list for ages waiting for some spare time to play it. It's a good doom game. A good sound track too in a weird kind of way.

I hope that someone remasters the original Doom and Doom 2 games with modern graphics. Imagine that, identical gameplay and level layouts but with perfect photo realistic visuals. How cool would that be?

Doom? Damn... i reckon last i played that was when it was an MS DOS game. One of the first experiences i had as a pc gamer. Closely followed by Quake. (much better game imo)

Multiplayer quake - ah the joy of running about and blasting your pals, and the mods, like auto sentry.
Have the newest Doom, still not finished it, am stuck in one section, not having much time to figure it out.

Just picked up Witcher 3, Wild Hunt for £7 on the xmas Steam sale with both expansions included. Quite enjoying it. Base game is only £2.50. 100% worth it for both. I mean it is 10 years old, but rated as one of the greatest games ever made along with the likes of Red Dead 2. It's certainly a massive game, great scripts and quests, engaging storylines and combat... It was recommended to me by a family member. I would recommend it also.
