Hi

My name is Tim. I bought about 5 acres of unmanaged old coppice about a year ago in the South Wales borders.

I recently enrolled on a course on Coppicing with the Black Mountain College.

One of my tasks is to restore some old axes and other hand tools for use in my wood and I was pointed towards this site as a good source of useful information should I need it.

Thank you for your welcome!

Tim

Welcome to the forum Tim :)
Looking after woodland has to be one of life's most satisfying pastimes! You're a bit outside our area (Montgomeryshire) but we have a few members of our conservation group with coppice woodland experience, if you have any questions feel free to get in touch :)

Thank you all,

Yes will be busy! Chainsaw course with a certificate at the end (I hope).

All members welcome to visit and offer advice!!! Also if you would like to fell a tree or two, chainsaws, ppe and free tea and coffee on site!

I know you guys are multi skilled, so there’s lots of questions I may need to ask from well informed winch advice to basic stuff on axes and other hand tools.

Should I come up with challenges your help most welcome.

Kind regards, Tim

Thank you! I’ll do that! Next week is chainsaw training, but I’ll get back to you.

Hello and welcome Tim.

Congrats on your purchase. Probably a few eyes green with envy after reading it.

How handy are you with a file? You're going to need to be very handy.. Same for first aid and cooking good food over a fire. Shelter building? The members of this forum can teach all, so don't be shy with your questions/problems.

I'm just on a weekend with NCFed, National Coppicing Federation, the meeting and exchanges of knowledge by these generally lone workers has been phenomenal. To get such skilled people together, hegelayers, hurdle makers, willow basket makers etc makes for a wonderfully full experience, I haven't had a single conversation that wasn't interesting.

Worth looking up your local groups and maybe joining.
