Has anyone had any experience with those yo you mechanical fishing reels? and does anyone know the law regarding them. I had a run in once with the fishing feds for using a hobo line so figure there may be legislation.

As Chris said, as far as I'm aware they're legal as long as they're used in a certain way and within local bylaws. To use as intended as a survival aid they would not be legal as setting them up and going off to do something else is a no-no.
I would say that they're actually a great bit of kit and it's good to practice using one, or a few, so that if there's a need, or opportunity (A different country?) then they're a familiar tool.

Are you in Island somewhere, if so rules could be different to UK.
