Look up the "Constrictor Hitch" on a knot tying site, you could tie one of those and then fasten the loose ends as a hand loop.

Or a turks head knot leaving two ends long which you can then tie a sailor's knife lanyard knot in.

Here are a couple of knots on my channel. The Turks Head shown here isn't the easiest one to tie over the hand but it is a nice knot.

If you did decide to change your mind and drill the stick btw, here's what I would recommend.

Get some brass tubing and a drill bit exactly the same size as the tubing. Drill the hole, sand the outside of the tubing and cover it in superglue then drive it through the hole. Take it level using a rasp/file then tidy up with a little sand paper. Finish off by flanging the ends of the tube using a wide centre punch pushed in by hand, this will push the metal into parts that it might not quite touch, will thin/round the tube making it less prone to sawing at the lanyard. Finish off with a final sanding to remove any burrs from the tube.

Me, I have variety of sticks, my urban sticks have a webbing strap, simple rivet and press stud, my rural sticks have a cut down leather belt, riveted into a double loop one to go round the stick another round my wrist, works ok.
