I am now using "King of the Mountain" wool clothing when out tracking in Scotland. I suppose this will be a little bit of a review. The thing about KOTM wool clothing that kills you is the price. It is very very very expensive. Most items after postage and import duty are a minimum of £240. So why do I have their bush shirt , bunwarmer pants and rancher jacket. I have heard people say it is too expensive but when I ask them to add up the money they have spent on their hand made custom knives, theirs cost more. I guess it is partly priorities, I don't like being cold. I bought one piece each six months for eighteen months and have found it to be of good value. So what is special about it: it is camouflaged and silent> The camo is woven in and is very waterproof so far for west coast Scotland and is very warm. You can see more at http://www.kingofthemountain.com/http/ .
I find the bunwarmer pants to be a bit heavy and in hindsight would get bunlite pants. The autumn camo patern is suitable for the UK as blowdown is more of the above tree line or snow camo. The rancher jacket is warm enough for here in the UK. It is also worth checking out their competition, Sleeping Indian who are slightly cheaper. Unlike Swanni their gear does not need reproofing after a few years because of the construction. The quality of KOTM is top notch. Do I need it is another question? Well when stalking it is a lot quieter than any other camo I have worn, when lying down for extended periods I stay warmer and I find the camo blends very well as it is so muted, it is woven in rather than printed on. The pockets on my garments are very limited so if you cary a lot of other gear get something else to carry it in. I personaly am reluctant to use it near an open fire as I do not want it to absorbe the scent of smoke for stalking. It is a very specialised piece of clothing and unless you had the need or the kit lust for it you would not spend the money on it. I suppose the ethical part is that it is wool. This is turning in to a ramble so I am off to bed as it is quite late.

Hope this was helpfull to somebody

I looked at purchasing a similar Highland stalking outfit in wool from "Sleeping Indian Designs" but the total outlay for jacket & pants, without adding import duty and shipping, was close to $1000! It does though look rather well made stuff.

Nice stuff, even if camouflage isn't for everyone, though there are a lot who do insist on it too.

I've been wondering about some of our 'home grown' traditional hunting, shooting and fishing manufacturers.
People like Haggarts in Aberfeldy not only make clothing but they weave the cloth too. Traditional materials, comfortable, hard wearing clothing and in muted tweed colours and designs. Not cheap, but of truly excellent quality.

Does anyone have any other similar links?

If Haggarts were prepared to cut/make a jacket & pants as per the construction above (or at least to a similar modern design) I would be up for one in a funky and 'loud' tweed suitable for the West Highlands. I don't think they would though.

A few ForestryCommission Scotland Rangers still buy the classic tweed stalking suit with their clothing allowance and from an outfitter such as Haggarts.

I do take your point, but those garments have stood the test of time, cut and all. Remember they're part of a layering system too. They're meant to be comfortable, very hard wearing, practical garments; and they are, but they're not cheap.

There's a tendency in bushcraft to look to ex-army kit when to be honest the hunting, shooting and fishing stuff would really be more appropriate.

Who else do you know that sells good traditional stuff?

Cheers,
Toddy

I was looking for a long while for some more, let me say traditional outdoor style, and type of clothing.. I ran into this company from the States.. http://www.filson.com/home/index.jsp . I made an order, and the stuff is great... I did make the big booboo and order the Tin Clothe.. that stuff is a little on the heavy side, and very stiff.. it's heavier that Barbour, but works the same..
Filson stuff comes up quite often on ebay, not always at a bargain price mind. I managed to snag a waistcoat that should be winging it's way over to me now :) .

I've not used these folks but they do a wool range as well as camo. Prices look reasonable.
And if I win the lottery I'll definitely get some KOTM stuff.

How can you afford it? I bought a shooting pouch of theirs, years ago. Today they want $135 for something I bought for $15.

Filsons has become very trendy - like Duluth Pack, but worse.

We buy our wool clothes at the Salvation Army thrift shop.
