winter footwear idea

This time of year my mind tends to turn to what I will wear on my feet in the depths of the winter mud and snow.

There's always wellies of course, but I'm thinking of another option.

Felt ankle length boots coupled with some kind of overshoe/boot.

I know someone who sells the felt boots which are quite lightweight but not cut out for outdoor use without more protection.

As for the overboots, I've looked at Army overshoes, latex gardening overshoes and light latex overboots aimed at bikers.

Ideally I'd like something breathable, maybe canvas, and light in weight.

Any thoughts/ideas anyone. Anyone done this and can speak from experience?

Can't see past wellies for mud and snow myself. Wellies have moved on, I got a pair of posh hunters as slight seconds for £70 a couple of years ago. Best £70 I've ever spent, even if I am missing the range rover.

I was up a hill with them on all day yesterday, having a last cast, walked around 5 miles up and down rough hill and wandered a mile or so round the loch, stood in them all day, I still find them amazing to wear. Other lochs I wear my boots but there's a little river wading involved getting up to this one so the wellies come into their own.

Very warm to wear in the winter.

Do you mean galoches ?......that might be Scot's/ French spelling....Galoshes ? Nope, Goloshes, apparantly.
Rubber overshoes or bootee type things.

The other thing that I have seen used to great effect are the canvas upper duck boots. The kind the American army wore.

If you do go with wellies, I got some rok dundee which were on sale for £29.99 everywhere last year, but are back up to £89.99 this year.
Theyve been great so far.

New England Overshoes (NEOS) make some good looking overshoes that you could wear less warm footwear inside. They are synthetic though.

Thanks guys, some good suggestions. Teepee, thanks, I had been trying to remember the name of these. Googled them and came across a BCUK thread which I contributed to and I have even spoken to the Uk suppliers. Alzheimers here we come! Why not just get a pair of Sorel boots? They seem to be exactly what you are describing.

They should be warm enough, but you will be very limited in terms of the terrain you can travel. Crampons are extremely hard to use with such a set up.

Another vote for the Neos, I have to be a bit choosy about which boots I wear underneath but so far I've been really happy with them.

I went for the Navigator 5 after hearing good things about them, these guys imported them for me and now stock them I believe ..

Not too sure on the weight but I can check tonight when I get in. I went for the Large which fit over my size 9 boots okay, if you want them just over a sock or mukluk then you'd have to check the sizes a bit more carefully I think.

Warm too - the wood is a good insulator.

A pair of muckboots seems the obvious choice for me. Last thing you want in the cold and wet is the hassle of two pairs of footwear to put on and take off! Muckboots: warm, dry, quick drying, easy to clean, quick to pull on and off!

In terms of sizing, I wear US 10.5 boots, which in the same model are UK size 10, for what it's worth.

Also, Baffin (http://www.baffin.com/) makes similar designs for extreme cold weather. Most of their boots are a felt boot of some sort with an outer shell.
