I am on the lookout for a van to replace my old transit but there is so much to consider and choose from i dont know where to start i like Merc sprinters as i think they have one of the best records for lasting but for my budget of say £5000 i am struggling to find many or any at all apart from done 250,000 miles,Ideally i am after something i can use for work and play(Bushcraft, canoing)any pointers would be appreciated .

probably a little small but my old citroen berlingo (R reg) covered 222,000 before the head gasket blew and couldn't afford to fix it. in fact anything with the pergeot 1.9 XUD engine will last almost forever.

I know you pay a little more for them but the VW transporter is a cracking van.
Sold mine last year on a 97 p reg with 269,000 mles and in all that time never missed a beat.

I have a 55reg peugeot expert with the TDi 1.9. its been a fantastic van not a sniff of trouble in 6yrs, economical, quick, big enough to use & small enough to run around in

Emigrating soon too I am;)

Anything that does not have a Peuogot engine/gearbox and clutch!
I had a Boxer and the gearbox/clutch had to be replaced far too early .. so I got an Expert and the gearbox/clutch gave up almost imediately!

My grotes worth- if you are likely to be using the M6 toll road then the Vivaro/Trafic, when laden, goes through as a car.

I'm on my third VW campervan. Current one is T5. Main reason is that a lot of motoring is in Europe and VWs are so common that most mechanics are familiar with them and parts are plentiful, if not always cheap. I like mine. Before I retired, I used to use a campervan for work, which involved travelling around England a lot: it saved me a fortune in hotel bills.

I wouldn't want to claim any van is the best- just best for purpose. If I didn't want one to sleep in, I'd get somethng smaller which did more mpg.

Had my hi ace from new(55 reg)nearly done 110,000, great van very happy with it, i use it for my dogs/canoeing/camping etc, & with the tailgate rear door, you've rain cover. Also had a nissan vanette, i got it with 250,000 on it ran it for a year then px'ed it for more than i paid for it, very warm in the cab though, as you are on top of the engine.

VW T5s have their own issues but they are well known. They tend to either eat clutches/DMFs or hardly need them at all. No owners of the forums have been able to pin it down to year, model/spec, or anything else. It is just pot luck. The newer larger VWs are rebadged Mercs, the older Mercs (pre 2003) suffer with tin worm. The auto/semi variants drink fuel if driven hard.
