Not a traditional snow shovel as such but arguably more versatile i use a snowclaw, http://www.petesy.co.uk/snowshovel-pah/light ,packs easily and can be used in a number of ways eg sitmat windbreak, splint, or if frivolous -sledge Also good to keep in car to remove snowfall off bonnet roof etc.
can be used to make test pit for avalanche risk or snowhole digging. Best paired with extra kit if you are in a group eg a handled shovel, avalanche probe
and of course you will have your ice axe with you if you are out in snowy conditions right ?
i work on the principle that the best kit for an emergency is the kit you have with you. i carry the snowclaw as it is more convenient than a handled shovel. hence i have it with me.i have two and get my mate to carry the other- if i get buried i want him to have the means to dig me out! with that and a light ice axe you can fashion most kinds of shelter thougha snow saw or similar is also a lightweight useful extra if you are serious about snowholing to cut blocks.

oh and snowclaw can be used as a "deadman" type anchor or be buried and used to secure a tent guyline

Hey Orric
I picked up a similar one last year for £12.99 (will check manufacturer and let you know) from xstock in Irvine. only used it once to clear around car it was robust enough to remove the compacted snow. It dose do the job .
I must admit got it, after being out bid on a couple of these.

Anyone have any recommendations? would like something to take out when i hit the mountains this winter was looking at these http://bit.ly/1cbKynf

I have bought those in your link this year from Costco - as have most of my neighbours in the Mountain Rescue! You get a pack of 2 take down snow shovels for less than £20, which are identical to shovels sold in climbing shops at £60 each, they even have the holes drilled to allow them to be used as belays.

Hey Orric, I've got one of the Costco shovels in the boot of the Saab, remind me next time I see you at the loch and I'll dig it out for you to look at

The Snowclaw has it's uses.

It's very light and takes up no room in your pack or on the outside for emergency use.

It shifts a lot of snow in a confined area and I found it very useful when working inside a snow hole.

Having said that, I would not consider it as a replacement to a proper snow shovel for general use.

I have both and consider each tool to have it's place.

I should be down for a paddle tomorrow, probably with the ski, but Thursday's forecast looks a bit hardcore! Let me know closer to time what your plans are.

Stuart.

yes, I agree with you wayland its a useful bit of kit and I will quite often take it with me on those days when a proper shovel appears a bit over the top for the conditions but for just in case.As I say better to have the claw with me than nothing. That said I like the black diamond shovel especially the one that you can keep a snow saw in the handle.
On the subject of cheap kit lidl did snow shovels last year and they were good value :- they must have been cheap cos I got two. snow shovels are one of those bits of kit you can pick up cheaply in mid summer sales, they go up in price this time of year!
