evening all, i have 3 knives i use in the woods, well two and an 'emergency' knife really they are a whitby erm knife(not entirely sure what the model is but i bought it cause i had nothing when i started and i liked the handle and price £18. the other is a hultafors heavy duty bushcraft knife pretty good for £6.95 and the other is a sealey lock knife that ill be honest ive never used but i take it as a just in case type thing.

i have been thinking about sharpening the first two but have no stone etc.

i found this on greenman http://www.greenmanbushcraft.co.uk/cutting-tools/3-piece-diamond-sharpening-set-.htm and thought it sounded good

then saw this on amazon and thought, hmm, they look the same but check out the price difference: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Spot-1...25&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=hilka+sharpening+set

and ive also been offered the long term use but not actual ownership(my mate bought it but he has the wrong bevel on his knife??) of this: http://www.greenmanbushcraft.co.uk/cutting-tools/japanese-waterstone-combination-1-000-6-000g.htm

what do i do??

forget all of that stuff !

go and get yourself a Spyderco Sharpmaker....the only sharpener that you will ever need that will put hair shaving sharp edges on ALL your knives including all your kitchen knives.

IMO the best sharpener on the market.

I usually use a DC4 in the field, or more recently one of Shep's whetstone strop sets.

Occasionally at home I'll use the bigger whetstones but it's only once or twice a year.

Hiya,

Not usually a fan of wee sharpeners but my mind was changed with the Blade-Tech. Sits on my keys and is actually pretty darn good at keeping knives/axes up to task in the field & for £9.95 good money. LINK Great bushy stocking filler too.

thats more in my price range, will it work for both my knives? ones stainless and ones carbon.

also, im good at stropping, ask my ex

Yes, it'll do both.
You really don't need to sharpen in the field unless you've done some serious work with your blade, stropping should keep it sharp enough.
Any more than a 2-3 days away, then you might want to consider taking a sharpener with you.

that may be what im after. i could borrow the jap whetstone to do them at home and use the blade tek while away. and you say it works on axes?

Yup use it on a variety of blades - from penknives to my Husqvarna hatchet, they will eventually wear out but last for ages and eminently portable. Well worth the tenner. I do have more serious kit at home if a blade needs more serious attention but the Tech's always in my pocket, hones up my billhook a treat too.

I have the spyderco sharpmaker, it is very easy to use and gives a great result on an edge that need sharpening but it is no good on a really blunt or damaged edge, for that I use jap water stones followed by stropping. Those diamond stones on greenman can be found a lot cheaper on ebay.
